This study analyzed the characteristics of traditional department stores and focused on the changes observed in department stores opened after 2020. Traditional department stores have evolved by adopting a unifying appearance and efficient interior layout strategies to enhance their corporate image and maximize sales. Strategies such as CI, SI, and VMD have resulted in department stores having similar appearances across different companies, with most stores adopting an enclosed layout and shared spaces having limited significance. Furthermore, an analytical framework was applied to examine the spatial and functional aspects of department stores across different eras and identify common characteristics among companies. Examining four department stores opened after 2020 as case studies revealed significant changes in the spatial configuration of department stores. They have moved away from a unified appearance and adopted unique exteriors. Moreover, they have deviated from efficient interior layouts and incorporated inefficient circulation paths and wider corridors. These stores have also allocated more than half of thenoperating areas to rest and exhibition spaces, introducing new approaches. As a result, neutral spaces within the department stores now serve various functions such as relaxation, exhibition, experience, and education. This transformation has shifted the focus of department stores from a single purpose of shopping to providing diverse experiences. With changes in exterior and interior configurations and the emergence of new programs, department stores now have the opportunity to establish a sense of place identity that was previously absent in their uniform appearances and layouts.
