This study focuses on the various vocabularies found in the lyrics of Jeongseon Arari and examines the regional culture reflected in the folk songs sung by the people of Jeongseon. The findings reveal that the vocabularies appearing in the lyrics embody diverse aspects of Jeongseon’s local culture. Words such as “Cheopcheop Sanjung”(deep in layered mountains) and “Seongmaryeong” illustrate the region’s high and rugged mountainous landscape, while expressions like “Doenkkokkari” and “Hwangsaeyeoul” reflect the harsh and turbulent waterways of the area. In addition, terms including “Gangnangbap,” “Gondre,” and “Memulgukjuk” portray the poor and insufficient dietary culture of local residents, whereas “Teotdoji” and “Saejobat” reveal the living conditions of impoverished tenant farmers and slash-and-burn farmers. Furthermore, vocabularies such as “Oridae” and “Cheolkkachi” indicate the industrial culture associated with mining and railway industries. This study is significant in that it sheds light on the natural environment as well as the everyday life and industrial culture of the Jeongseon region through an analysis of the lyrics of Jeongseon Arari.

이 연구는 정선아라리의 사설에 나타난 다양한 어휘에 주목하고, 정선 지역민이 부른 민요에 나타난 지역 문화를 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 정선아라리 사설의 어휘에서 정선 지역의 다양한 문화를 파악할 수 있었다. 정선아라리의 사설에서 어휘 ‘첩첩산중’, ‘성마령’ 등은 정선 지역의 높고 험준한 산세를, ‘된꼬까리’, ‘황새여울’ 등은 험한 물길의 자연 문화를 발견하였다. 또한 정선아라리의 사설에 나타난 어휘 ‘강낭밥’, ‘곤드레’, ‘메물국죽’ 등은 가난하고 배고픈 식생활을, ‘텃도지’와 ‘새조밭’은 가난한 소작농과 화전민의 생활 문화를 파악할 수 있었다. 그리고 정선아라리의 사설의 내용에서 어휘 ‘오리대’, ‘철까치’ 등은 광산과 철도 산업을 통한 산업 문화를 알 수 있었다. 이는 본 연구가 정선아라리의 사설을 통해 정선 지역의 자연 문화와 정선 지역민의 생활과 산업 문화의 일면(一面)을 조명한 것에 의의가 있다.
