This study is examines the historical consciousness and modes of practical response articulated by Hangwa Ryu Jung-ak 柳重岳, 1843–1909, during the turbulent period from the opening of Korea’s ports to the Korean Empire. As a central figure of the Hwaseo School, Ryu inherited the intellectual lineage of Yi Hang-ro, Kim Pyeong-muk, and Ryu Jung-gyo, and understood the encroachment of the West and Japan not merely as a diplomatic or military threat, but as a civilizational crisis that endangered the ethical order of Confucian sage-learning. In his writings, including A Discourse on the Rejection of the West and A Discrimination between Japan and the West, Ryu conceptualized the confrontation between sage-learning and Western learning, and between heavenly principle and human desire, as the fundamental structure of his age. He thereby defined the West and Japan as forces that disrupted the normative order. For Ryu, the legitimacy of rejecting the West did not rest simply on hostility toward the external world, but on the moral imperative to preserve the rectitude of the Way. In this sense, his discourse of “defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy” was deeply linked to ethical self-discipline. Ryu’s practical response, however, cannot be reduced solely to direct participation in righteous-army activities. In Questions and Answers at Guryong, he redefined the criteria of loyalty and treachery and justified the raising of troops by Confucian scholars as an unavoidable act of moral emergency. Moreover, through correspondence, he sought to unite fellow disciples and local Confucian literati, while promoting relief for the bereaved families of martyrs, the publication of collected writings, and the transmission of the orthodox lineage. These activities reveal that lectures, publication, relief, and solidarity functioned as crucial instruments of intellectual and ethical resistance. Thus, Ryu Jung-ak should not be regarded simply as a conservative figure who resisted modernization. Rather, he should be reevaluated as a Confucian practitioner who sought to preserve the normative order of sage-learning and reconstruct the ethical agency of the literati community amid the crisis of civilizational transformation.
