A Cross-Cultural Study of Women’s Views on Marriage in Chinese Tujia Crying-Marriage Songs and Korean Sijipsari-norae
This study aims to comparatively analyze women’s views on marriage as represented in the Tujia (⼟家族) crying-marriage songs [哭嫁歌, kūjiàgē] of China and the Korean sijipsari-norae (시집살이노래, “songs of married life”) from a cross-cultural perspective. Both song traditions are marriage songs that give shape to women’s experiences and emotions surrounding marriage, yet they differ in that the crying-marriage songs were formed within the ritual context preceding marriage, whereas the sijipsari-norae emerged from women’s lived experience after marriage. Based on this cross-cultural perspective, the study compares the two song traditions across four dimensions: perceptions of the marriage system, family relations, women’s lives, and communal order. The analysis shows that the crying-marriage songs reveal women’s anxiety and premonition prior to marriage through themes of matchmaking, departure from the natal home, and separation from one’s family of origin, while the sijipsari-norae give shape to post-marital life through themes of conflict with the husband’s family, the hardship of labor, and longing for the natal family. With respect to perceptions of the marriage system, the crying-marriage songs expose the injustice of the institution through vehement protest directed at the matchmaker, whereas the sijipsari-norae reveal the gap between the promises of the institution and lived reality through resigned utterances that accept a marriage already decided. The sijipsari-norae tradition, however, is not confined to such resigned utterances alone; it has also transmitted defiant utterances in which women logically confront and rebut the unjust treatment of their husband's family, revealing a multilayered quality that resists reduction to a single emotional register. Furthermore, while both song traditions share the recognition that women’s lives are defined within family and communal order, they diverge in how women’s experience and memory are transmitted: the crying-marriage songs through a ritual community of practice formed in the spatiotemporal context of the wedding ritual, and the sijipsari-norae through an everyday community of practice formed through the sharing of experience in labor and daily life. This comparison demonstrates that women’s songs from different cultural traditions offer the possibility of mutual interpretation for understanding women’s life experience. Furthermore, by adopting a cross-cultural approach that reflects on both one’s own culture and the target culture in the process of learning Korean, this study is significant in that it explores the educational potential for self-reflection on one’s own culture through such mutual reference.
