This study aimed to develop an integrated understanding of international students’ adaptation to university life in Korea by conducting a Qualitative Research Synthesis using a Qualitative Metasummary approach. Twelve qualitative studies published in KCI-indexed and candidate journals between 2005 and 2025 were selected through the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, and their methodological quality was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Data were analyzed following the Qualitative Metasummary procedures proposed by Sandelowski and Barroso (2007). The analysis yielded 224 condensed findings, which were synthesized into 36 descriptive themes, 10 synthesized themes, and three overarching themes: Encountering an Unfamiliar Environment, Struggling for Adaptation, and Growth and Transformation. The findings indicate that international students' adaptation follows a developmental process from encountering unfamiliar environments, through continuous struggles for adaptation, to personal growth and transformation. Social support systems, including professors, peers, co-national student communities, university support services, and family support, were identified as key facilitating factors throughout the adaptation process. Based on these findings, a conceptual model explaining the adaptation process of international students was proposed. This study contributes to the literature by integrating fragmented qualitative findings into a comprehensive understanding of the adaptation process and by presenting a conceptual framework that explains how international students adapt to university life in Korea. The findings provide practical implications for developing integrated university support systems and evidence-based policies to promote international students’ successful adaptation and social integration.

본 연구는 국내 외국인 유학생의 대학생활 적응 경험을 통합적으로 이해하기 위하여질적 연구합성의 관점에서 기존 질적 연구를 체계적으로 분석하고, 메타요약을 중심으로 반복적으로 나타나는 경험과 핵심주제를 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 분석대상은2005년부터 2025년까지 국내 KCI 등재(후보) 학술지에 게재된 질적 연구 12편이며, PRISMA 2020 절차에 따라 문헌을 선정하고 CASP를 활용하여 문헌의 질을 평가하였다. 자료분석은 Sandelowski와 Barroso(2007)의 질적 메타요약 절차를 적용하였다. 분석 결과 총 224개의 축약진술문을 추출하였으며 이를 통합하여 36개의 하위주제, 10 개의 주제, 3개의 핵심주제를 도출하였다. 핵심주제는 ‘낯선 환경과의 마주침’, ‘적응을위한 고군분투’, ‘성장과 변화’로 나타났다. 또한 외국인 유학생의 대학생활 적응 경험은‘낯선 환경과의 마주침 → 적응을 위한 고군분투 → 성장과 변화’로 이어지는 과정적 구조를 보였으며, 사회적 지지체계는 적응을 촉진하는 핵심적인 매개 요인으로 확인되었다. 이를 바탕으로 외국인 유학생의 대학생활 적응 과정을 설명하는 개념적 모형을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 개별 질적 연구에서 단편적으로 제시된 외국인 유학생의 대학생활 적응 경험을 체계적으로 통합하여 적응의 과정과 구조를 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 연구결과는 대학과 지역사회가 연계된 통합적 지원체계 구축과 외국인 유학생 지원정책 수립을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
