This study examined the meanings that international students’ volunteer experiences hold in the process of developing a sense of belonging in Korean society. One-on-one semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six international students enrolled at a university in Region A who had participated in volunteer activities during their stay in Korea. The data were analyzed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis procedures. Four themes emerged. First, volunteering served as an initial point of social contact, enabling international students to move beyond academically centered and socially limited routines and connect directly with local communities. Second, repeated interactions facilitated relationships and psychological closeness with Koreans, other international students, and community members. These relationships allowed participants to accumulate social capital, including trust, emotional support, and shared information. Third, the participants came to perceive themselves not merely as foreigners receiving assistance but as active members capable of contributing to the community. This shift strengthened their self-esteem and self-efficacy. Fourth, these experiences fostered more positive perceptions of Korean society and a partial sense of belonging. However, linguistic and cultural barriers, a lack of sustained close relationships, and experiences of being categorized as foreigners continued to mark boundaries between the participants and Korean society. The findings suggest that international students’ sense of belonging in Korean society is not the immediate outcome of a single volunteer activity. Rather, it is a gradual psychological and relational process shaped by repeated social participation, sustained relationships, and recognition as equal members of the community. The study highlights the need for universities and local communities to provide continuous and collaborative volunteer programs and to establish integrated support systems that connect Korean language education with meaningful social participation.

본 연구는 외국인 유학생의 자원봉사 활동 경험이 한국 사회 소속감 형성 과정에서어떠한 의미를 갖는지 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 A지역 대학에 재학 중이며한국 체류 중 자원봉사 경험이 있는 외국인 유학생 6명을 대상으로 일대일 반구조화 심층면담을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 Braun & Clarke(2006)의 주제분석 절차에 따라분석하였다. 분석 결과 네 가지 주제가 도출되었다. 첫째, 자원봉사는 외국인 유학생이학업 중심의 제한된 생활권을 벗어나 지역사회와 직접 연결되는 사회적 접촉의 출발점으로 기능하였다. 둘째, 반복적 상호작용은 한국인, 다른 유학생 및 지역사회 구성원과의 관계 형성과 심리적 친밀감을 촉진하고 신뢰, 정서적 지지, 정보 공유를 포함한 사회적 자본을 축적하게 하였다. 셋째, 참여자들은 자신을 도움을 받는 외국인이 아니라 공동체에 기여할 수 있는 능동적 구성원으로 재인식하며 자존감과 자기효능감을 높였다. 넷째, 이러한 경험은 한국 사회에 대한 긍정적 인식과 부분적 소속감으로 이어졌으나언어 및 문화적 장벽, 지속적인 친밀한 관계의 부족, 외국인으로 구분되는 경험은 여전히 경계로 남았다. 따라서 외국인 유학생의 한국 사회 소속감은 일회적 활동의 결과가아니라 반복적인 사회참여, 지속적인 관계 형성, 동등한 구성원으로서의 인정이 축적되며 점진적으로 형성되는 심리적·관계적 과정으로 이해할 수 있다. 본 연구는 대학과지역사회가 지속적이고 협력적인 자원봉사 프로그램을 운영하고 한국어교육과 사회참여를 연계한 지원 체계를 구축할 필요가 있음을 제안한다.
