This study examines the relationship between preaching and communication through the concept of the Fallen Condition Focus (FCF) proposed by Bryan Chapell. Chapell defines FCF as the fallen human condition that necessitated the writing of a biblical text and argues that preachers can understand both the meaning of the text and the necessity of the gospel by identifying it. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that FCF is not merely a preaching technique but a homiletical principle that connects the preacher’s communication with God and communication with the congregation. To achieve this purpose, the study first explores the concept of FCF and its relationship to Christ-centered preaching. It then analyzes the role of FCF in helping preachers understand both the biblical text and the contemporary audience. Furthermore, the study investigates the function of FCF in gospel proclamation and persuasive preaching while considering its potential to overcome the limitations of information-centered and moralistic preaching. Finally, a sermon based on Luke 15:1–7 is presented as an example of the practical application of FCF. The findings indicate that FCF serves as an important homiletical principle by connecting the biblical text with the audience, revealing both the fallen condition of humanity and God’s redemptive work, and guiding preaching toward gospel-centered communication. Therefore, contemporary Korean churches should actively employ FCF in order to restore preaching that is both faithful to Scripture and effective in communicating with modern listeners.

본 연구는 브라이언 채펠(Bryan Chapell)의 FCF(Fallen Condition Focus) 개념을 중심으로 설교와 커뮤니케이션의 관계를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 채펠은 FCF를 성경 본문이 기록되게 된 인간의 타락한 상태로 정의하며, 설교자는 이를 발견함으로써 본문의 의미와 복음의 필요성을 이해할 수 있다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 FCF가 단순한 설교 작성 기법이 아니라 설교자의 하나님과의 커뮤니케이션 및 청중과의 커뮤니케이션을 연결하는 설교학적 원리임을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 먼저 FCF의 개념과 그리스도 중심 설교와의 관계를 살펴보았으며, 이어 FCF가 설교자의 본문 이해와 청중 이해에 어떠한 역할을 수행하는지를 분석하였다. 또한 복음 전달과 설교적 설득의 관점에서 FCF의 기능을 고찰하고, 정보 전달 중심 설교와 도덕주의 설교의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 대안으로서의 가능성을 검토하였다. 나아가 누가복음 15장 1-7절을 본문으로 한설교문을 제시하여 FCF의 실제적 적용을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 FCF는 본문과 청중을 연결하고, 인간의 타락한 상태와 하나님의 구속 사역을 함께 드러냄으로써 설교를 복음 중심의 소통으로 이끄는 중요한 설교학적 원리임을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 현대 한국교회는 FCF를 적극적으로 활용함으로써 본문에 충실하면서도 청중과 효과적으로 소통하는 설교를 회복해야 할 것이다.
