The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate Walter Brueggemann’s prophetic homiletics from the perspective of Reformed homiletics and to explore the proper direction of its appropriation for the Korean evangelical pulpit. Brueggemann made significant academic contributions by elevating preaching to a prophetic event and inviting the congregation as transformative agents through his concepts of prophetic imagination and the poetic of grief and amazement, aimed at awakening an "alternative consciousness" against the dominant "imperial prose." However, from a Reformed perspective, his homiletics reveals several critical theological limitations: first, his emphasis on canonical polyphony and infinite openness undermines the perspicuity of Scripture; second, his deliberate exclusion of New Testament Christological illumination results in a lack of redemptive-historical consistency; third, his rhetorical view of reality as a linguistic construct pushes the objectivity of revelation behind human speech, leading to a New Hermeneutical inversion that attributes homiletical power to language itself rather than to the Holy Spirit; fourth, his suspension of ultimate interpretation hinders communal obedience; and fifth, his identification of the "empire" with a specific political camp biases the preacher's positionality. In conclusion, drawing upon Kevin J. Vanhoozer’s canonical-linguistic theology, this study proposes a balanced Reformed prophetic preaching model. This model embraces Brueggemann's imagination and poetic language but firmly anchors them upon the objective revelation of God, the redemptive-historical foundation of the cross and resurrection, and the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit, thereby reclaiming the authority of "Thus says the Lord."

본 연구는 2025년 별세한 현대 구약학 및 설교학의 거두 월터 브루그만(Walter Brueggemann)의 예언자적 설교론을 개혁주의 설교학의 관점에서 비판적으로 평가하고, 한국 교회 강단을 위한 올바른 전유(appropriation)의 방향을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 브루그만은 지배 문화인 ‘제국 의식’에 대항하는 ‘대안적 의식’을 일깨우기 위해 예언자적 상상력과 비탄 및 경이의 시학을 제시함으로써, 설교를 예언자적 사건으로 격상시키고 회중을 변혁적 주체로 초대하는 학문적 공헌을 세웠다. 그러나 그의 설교론은 개혁주의 관점에서 몇 가지 심각한 신학적 한계 를 지닌다. 첫째, 정경의 다성성과 무한한 개방성을 강조하여 성경의 명료성을 약화시키며, 둘째, 신약의 기독론적 조명을 배제하여 구속사적 일관성이 결여된다. 셋째, 실재를 발화의 구성물로 보는 언어관은 계시의 객관성을 수사학 뒤로 후퇴시키고 설교의 능력을 성령이 아닌 언어 자체에 돌리는 신해석학적 전도(顚倒)를 낳는다. 넷째, 끝없는 변증법적 긴장 유보는 공동체적 순종을 가로막으며, 다섯째, 제국 개념을 특정 정치 진영과 동일시함으로써 설교자의 위치성을 편향되게 만든다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 케빈 밴후저의 정경적-언어적 신학을 바탕으로 브루그만의 상상력과 시적 언어를 수용하되, 이를 하나님의 객관적 계시와 십자가 및 부활의 구속사적 토대, 그리고 성령의 주권적 역사 위에 재정립함으로써 “여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라”의 권위를 확보한 균형 잡힌 개혁주의 예언자적 설교 모델을 제시하고자 한다.
