This study explores the life and thought of Etty Hillesum (1914-1943), a Dutch Jewish woman who traversed a unique spiritual journey amidst the tragedy of the Holocaust. To examine Hillesum's spirituality—a field largely unexplored in Korean academia—this research employs Sandra Schneiders’ hermeneutical methodology, consisting of descriptive, critical, and constructive moments. The findings reveal that through her encounter with Julius Spier, Hillesum overcame psychological turmoil and achieved spiritual maturity by discovering her "inner sanctuary." Moving away from traditional concepts of an omnipotent God, she proposed a paradoxical theodicy of a "vulnerable presence," suggesting that humans must protect and help God within the reality of suffering. Furthermore, she attained inner peace through the physical spiritual practice of "kneeling" and practiced "existential solidarity" by refusing to go into hiding, choosing instead to share the fate of her people under Nazi persecution. In conclusion, Hillesum's spiritual legacy provides a practical model for restoring "contemplation in action" and a "spirituality of reconciliation" in a modern society plagued by extreme hatred and polarization. Her life and writings serve as a profound theological testimony to preserving human dignity and hope even in the most dire circumstances.

본 연구는 홀로코스트라는 인류사적 비극 속에서 독특한 영적 여정을 걸었던 네덜란드계 유대인 여성 에티 힐레섬(Etty Hillesum, 1914-1943)의 생애와 사상을 탐구하였다. 한국 학계에서 아직 미개척 분야인 힐레섬의 영성을 고찰하기 위해, 본 논문은 산드라 쉬나이더스 (Sandra Schneiders)의 해석학적 방법론(서술적-비판적-건설적 국면)을 적용하였다. 그 결과 힐레섬은 줄리어스 스피어와의 만남을 통해 심리적 혼란을 극복하고 ‘내면의 성소’를 발견하며 영적 성숙을 이루었다. 그녀는 전통적인 전능한 신관에서 벗어나, 고난의 현장에서 인간이 오히려 ‘연약한 하나님’을 지키고 도와야 한다는 역설적 신정론을 제시하였다. 아울러 . 또한 ‘무릎 꿇음’을 통하여 내면의 평화를 얻었으며, 나치의 박해 속에서도 은신을 거부하고 동족과 운명을 함께하는 ‘존재적 연대’를 실천하였다. 결론적으로 힐레섬의 영적 유산은 현대 사회의 극단적 혐오와 갈등 속에서 ‘세속 속의 관상’과 ‘화해의 영성’을 회복할 수 있는 실천적 모델을 제공하며, 고난 속에서도 인간의 존엄성과 희망을 지켜낼 수 있는 신학적 증언으로서 중요한 의의를 지닌다.
