This paper reexamines the Sarmishsay petroglyphs in Uzbekistan from the perspective of visual language formed and transmitted within the Central Asian steppe cultural sphere. Sarmishsay is a large-scale petroglyph site created by multiple cultural groups from the La te Neolithic to the early modern period, and i t should be understood not a s a record of a s ingle symbolic system but a s a corpus of v isua l expressions a ccumulated and transformed over a long duration. Based on the site’s natural environment and archaeological context, this study reviews the chronology and cultural attribution of the petroglyphs and synthesizes key scholarly discussions on major motifs to examine the cultural-historical significance of the Sarmishsay assemblage. Rather than limiting the analysis to the meanings of individual images, this paper situates the Sarmishsay petroglyphs within a long-term perspective on the formation and dissemination of shared visual norms and symbolic codes across the Central Asian steppe. To this end, it examines the characteristics of petroglyph traditions associated with major archaeological cultures from the Yamnaya–Afanasievo horizon to Turkic periods, and argues that Sa rmishsa y functioned a s a noda l point within s teppe n etworks a nd as a cumula tive archive of steppe visual language.

본 논문은 우즈베키스탄 사르미슈사이(Sarmishsay) 암각화를 중앙아시아 초원 문화권에서 형성･전승된 시각 언어의 관점에서 재검토하고자 한다. 사르미슈사이는 신석기 후기부터 근세에 이르기까지 여러 문화 집단이 참여한 대규모 암각화 유적으로, 단일 시기의 상징체계를 보여주는 자료라기보다 장기간에 걸쳐 누적･변형된 시각 표현의 집합체라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 유적의 자연환경과 고고학적 맥락을 바탕으로 암각화의 제작 시기와 제작 집단을 검토하고, 주요 도상들에 대한 학계의 핵심적 논의들을 정리하여 사르미슈사이 암각화의 문화사적 의의를 고찰하였다. 이에 본 논문은 사르미슈사이 암각화를 개별 도상의 의미 분석에 한정하지 않고, 중앙아시아 초원 지대전반에 공유된 시각 규범과 상징 코드의 형성과 확산이라는 장기적 관점에서 위치 짓고자 하였다. 이를 위해 사르미슈사이 암각화 유적과 관련 깊은 얌나야–아파나시에보 문화에서 튀르크 문화에 이르는 주요 고고학적 집단의 암각 문화적 특징을 검토하고, 사르미슈사이가 초원 네트워크의 교차점이자 시각 언어의 누적적 아카이브로 기능했음을 살펴보았다.
