The Korean Peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides. From the north, the East Korea Cold Current flows down to the east coast, while from the south, the Kuroshio Warm Current flows up to the south coast and into the southeast coast. On the southeast coast of the Korean Peninsula, the cold and warm currents meet. The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Bangudae Petroglyphs is located in Ulsan Bay on the southeast coast, and sword handle shaped of Majeseokgeom petroglyphs belonging to the Dolmen culture lineage are distributed in Yeongil Bay. The distribution of petroglyphs on the Korean Peninsula raises the need to view them within a marine geographical environment. Ocean currents ha ve n either t erritory n or n a tion. It a ppea rs t ha t Dolmen c ulture e ntered t he Korean Peninsula from the south by riding the movement of ocean currents, and that marine hunting culture, particularly whaling culture, entered the southeast coast from the north by riding the movement of ocean currents. This fact is confirmed by the Bangudae Petroglyphs. It is necessary to grasp the essence of Korean petroglyphs and view it objectively from a ma ritime cultura l perspective. It has been 30 years since the founding of the Korean Petroglyphs Research Association. Korean petroglyphs are a crucial subject and theme for Korean studies, yet they have been neglected by the Korean archaeological and art history communities. Research on Korean petroglyphs is facing a crisis due to the academic community's indifference. To broaden the horizons of Korean petroglyphs, scientific research conducted jointly with related disciplines such as archaeology, art history, anthropology, and geology is necessary. Just as the study of Korean history has been held hostage by a continental perspective, research on Korean petroglyphs appears to be buried within a peninsular perspective. While the Bangucheon Petroglyphs are l isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, research on Korean petroglyphs falls short of global standards. Major departments dedicated to the study of Korean petroglyphs must be established at universities to cultivate talent, and a National Petroglyphs Research Institute must be established in the Ulsan region, where they are concentrated, to achieve the globalization of research on Korean petroglyphs.
