This article examines the Pure Land thought of seventh-century Silla from the dual perspectives of Buddhist doctrine and religious faith. Focusing on the writings of major Buddhist thinkers such as Wonhyo, Gyeongheung, and Wŏnch’ŭk, the study investigates the development of Maitreya and Amitābha Pure Land doctrines in Silla, while also analyzing the forms of Maitreya devotion, Buddha-land belief associated with the Silla territory, and faith in the abodes of bodhisattvas. Commentarial studies on Maitreya thought in seventh-century Silla were mainly undertaken by Wonhyo and Gyeongheung. Due to the distinctive salvific belief in Maitreya’s future descent, rulers came to be sacralized as Wheel-Turning Kings (cakravartin), and close connections with the Hwarang institution also emerged. Furthermore, with the acceptance of Maitreya belief, ideas concerning rebirth and transmigration spread widely, bringing changes to Silla conceptions of life and death as well as to ritual practices. A funerary culture also developed in which Maitreya images were produced for the posthumous salvation of the deceased. Behind doctrinal developments, popular Buddhist devotion in seventh-century Silla also manifested through merit-making practices centered on small Buddhist votive images mass-produced from inexpensive materials for prayers of postmortem rebirth. In addition, from the seventh through the ninth centuries, particular regions of the Silla territory were identified as sacred Buddhist sites inhabited by bodhisattvas, giving rise to beliefs in Silla itself as a Buddha-land. Such faith in bodhisattva abodes appears to have functioned as an ideological and religious mechanism for integrating displaced populations from Goguryeo and Baekje. After the official acceptance of Buddhism, while intellectuals such as Wonhyo and Gyeongheung elevated the scholastic level of Buddhism through commentarial works on Maitreya and Amitābha thought, lay believers simultaneously cultivated their own forms of religious life on the level of faith and devotional practice. Following the political unification of the peninsula, the Silla state likewise sought to complete and reinforce its political integration through the power and symbolism of Buddhism. This constituted a distinctive characteristic of Silla Pure Land Buddhism.
