A gwejang consisted of two objects, gwe (几), an armrest or support, and jang (杖), a staff. Together, they symbolized respect and care for elderly and distinguished persons. The practice originated in the Liji (Book of Rites), and precedents on the Korean peninsula can be traced back to the Silla period. In the Goryeo dynasty, gwejang was generally bestowed upon officials who had held offices at the level of jaesin or above. However, even those who reached munha sijung, the highest post among the jaesin, did not automatically receive it. Its bestowal required the combined recognition of old age, usually around seventy, high political status, and distinguished service to the state. The primary function of gwejang was to honor elderly senior officials. It could also extend their tenure, but it was not a necessary condition for remaining in office after the age of seventy. In the early Goryeo period, recipients often stayed in office for about one more year. However, the debate over Ji Maeng during King Munjong’s reign shows that gwejang carried greater symbolic significance than a simple extension of tenure. Later recipients such as Jeong Yu-san, So Tae-bo, Kim Gyeong-yong, and Wang Chung retired soon after receiving it. During the period of military rule, gwejang was also used as a means of preserving power, as seen in the cases of Jeong Jung-bu and Choe Chung-heon. Although it formally remained a royal grace granted to elderly senior ministers, it could function politically as a justification for retaining authority. During the period of Yuan intervention, changes in the retirement system also altered the meaning of gwejang. While Song Bun’s case still shows a connection with tenure extension, Son Hong-ryang received gwejang more than ten years after retirement, indicating its use as symbolic respect for a state elder. In conclusion, the bestowal of gwejang in Goryeo was closely connected to the retirement system, but it was not merely an auxiliary means of postponing retirement. It was a special royal grace that recognized the political status and service of elderly officials who had served as jaesin. Depending on the period, it served various functions, including the honorific recognition of senior officials, tenure extension, and the preservation of political power.
