Identity and Aesthetic Characteristics of Korean Calligraphy : Focusing on the Calligraphyof Sojeon Son Jaehyeong
In East Asian written culture, seo (書, writing/calligraphy) has developed into an autonomous artistic domain that encompasses both visual form and spiritual content, transcending its function as a mere medium of record. Chinese shufa (書法, calligraphic method) places normative regulations and visual order at its core, centering on fa (法, method/law) and shi (勢, dynamic force), while at the same time situating calligraphy as an art aligned with cosmic order within the integrated horizon of dao (道, Way) and yi (藝, art). By contrast, Japanese shodō (書道, way of calligraphy) develops the concept of dō (道) in the direction of performative and ethical practice. Korean seoye (書藝, calligraphic art), on the other hand, expands written expression into the realm of artistic creation, giving prominence to visual form, individuality, and artistic autonomy. In particular, the process through which the term seoye became established in the modern Korean calligraphic community is not merely a nominal change. Rather, it is closely connected to efforts to reconfigure the identity of Korean calligraphy under the historical conditions of colonial experience and cultural reconstruction after Liberation. Within this context, Sojeon Son Jaehyeong (素荃 孫在馨) critically engaged with the existing concepts of shufa and shodō, and sought—through the use of the term seoye—to redefine calligraphy as an independent visual art. Son’s conception of calligraphy is characterized by an integrated understanding of fa (法), dao (道), and yi (藝), through which he preserves the normative dimensions of traditional calligraphy while creatively transforming them to realize a distinctly Korean modernity. His invention of the Sojeon style (素荃體) and works such as the stele inscription “Ichungmugong Byeokpajin Jeoncheopbi” (Stele for Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Byeokpajin Deployment) became crucial moments in extending calligraphic form and shaping the distinctive aesthetics of Korean calligraphy. Building on these issues, this study compares the aesthetic formation and development of the East Asian concept of seo and, on that basis, analyzes the formation and aesthetic characteristics of the Korean concept of seoye. Furthermore, by examining Son Jaehyeong’s views on and practice of calligraphy, the study aims to clarify the modern significance and art-historical status of Korean calligraphy, thereby reconsidering its identity and future orientation within the broader field of East Asian written art.
