Yonggang illok(龍岡日錄) is a diary written over a span of 40 years, from 1686 until just before his death, by Yonggang Hwang Su-il(黃壽一, 1666~1725). The author, Hwang Su-il, was a prominent disciple of Galam Yi Hyeon-il and Udam Jeong Si-han, and a scholar who achieved high renown for his expertise in ritual studies( 禮學) in the Yeongju and Andong regions of Gyeongsangbuk-do. However, very little has been known about his specific life and scholarship. Therefore, this study aims to examine the author’s life by comparing two handwritten manuscript editions of Yonggang illok, and to investigate the local customs of the Yeongju region reflected in the diary, as well as the literary value of the text. Although Hwang Su-il lost his parents at an early age and spent his entire life facing severe hardships, including natural disasters and epidemics, he never ceased his dedication to learning. He particularly excelled in ritual studies and possessed a deep understanding of Neo-Confucian metaphysics(理學), to the extent of debating theories such as Insimdosim-seol(人心道心說) and Sadan chiljeong-ron(四 端七情論) with his two mentors for days. As a diary of daily life, Yonggang illok captures various aspects of contemporary life in the Yeongju region. Among these, this paper examines practices such as boiling bracken, marriage customs, and rituals for continuing the family lineage. Furthermore, this study focuses on the literary qualities of Yonggang illok. Although it consists of a succession of fragmentary records, it forms an organic narrative structure through the intricate weaving of personal emotions, conflicts, recurring events, and the processes of growth and frustration. Despite suffering terrible agony throughout his life due to extreme natural disasters and epidemics, Hwang Su-il never abandoned his scholarly pursuits and instead devoted himself further to his studies. Witnessing the actual life of Hwang Su-il through Yonggang illok prompts us to reflect on the meaning of life and our own existence. In this process, Yonggang illok can be evaluated not merely as a historical document, but as a humanistic text that contemplates and seeks to understand human life.

『龍岡日錄』은 龍岡 黃壽一(1666-1725)이 1686년부터 작고하기 직전까지 40년에 걸쳐 쓴 일기이다. 저자 황수일은 갈암 이현일과 우담 정시한의 뛰어난 제자이자, 경북 영주와 안동 일대에서 예학으로 명성을 떨친 학자였다. 그러나 그의 구체적인 생애와 학문에 관해서는 거의 알려진 것이 없다. 이에 본 논문은 『용강일록』의 필사본 두 종을 대조하여 저자의 생애를 파악하고, 일기에 나타난 경북 영주 지역의 풍습, 그리고『용강일록』의 문학성 등을 살펴보고자 했다. 황수일은 어려서 부모를 여의고 평생을 자연재해, 전염병 등 혹독한 시련 속에서 보냈지만 학문에 대한 정진을 멈추지 않았다. 그는 특히 예학에 뛰어났을 뿐만 아니라, 두 스승과 며칠씩 인심도심설과 사단칠정론을 논할 만큼 이학에도 조예가 깊었다. 『용강일록』은 생활일기인 만큼 당대 영주 지방의 다양한 모습이 담겨 있다. 필자는 그중에서 고사리 삶기, 혼인 풍습, 대를 이으려는 의식 등을 살펴보았다. 그리고 『용강일록』이 지닌 문학성에도 주목하였다. 비록 단편적인 기록의 연속이지만, 개인의 감정과 갈등, 사건의 반복, 성장과 좌절의 과정이 얽히며 하나의 서사적 구조를 형성하기 때문이다. 황수일은 평생 극심한 자연재해와 전염병으로 끔찍한 고통을 겪으면서도 학문을 놓지 않고 정진했다. 우리는 『용강일록』을 통해 황수일이란 사람의 실제 삶을 보면서, 인생의 의미와 우리 삶의 모습을 되돌아보게 된다. 그 과정에서 『용강일록』을 단순히 하나의 사료 에 그치지 않고, 인간의 삶을 고민하고 이해하려는 인문학적 텍스트로도 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
