Mechanical Order and the Sensory Politics of the Body-Ranciere’s ‘Partage du Sensible’ and Buster Keaton’s Silent Films-
This study aimed to analyze how Buster Keaton’s bodily movements in silent films perform a sensory rearrangement of the policing order of the industrial era, based on Ranciere’s concepts of political and aesthetic regimes and the cinematic significance of the 100th anniversary of the release of the silent film (1926). In the industrial era, means of transportation such as locomotives and automobiles visually embody the policing order characterized by spatial predictability and inescapability through uniform motion. In contrast, Buster Keaton’s non-uniform bodily movements collide with regular mechanical rhythms, repeatedly bringing to visual the body that the policing order has excluded by treating it as noise. Furthermore, his blank expression, grounded in Kant’s disinterestedness, performs a de-identification with the emotional norms demanded by the industrial era?such as the anger and anxiety of workers, the suffering and fear of modern man, and the joy of romantic love?raising them to the realm of common sense and realizing subjectification in the Rancierean sense. The theoretical examination of the relationship between Ranciere’s concepts and Buster Keaton described in this study goes beyond focusing on the kinetics and materiality presented by existing phenomenological-genre studies; it redefines Buster Keaton’s films within a sensory-political dimension through Ranciere’s political aesthetics and offers resources for humanistic criticism regarding the ways in which technology organizes the sensory order of the human body. Through this study, it is hoped that Buster Keaton’s silent films can be reinterpreted as an aesthetic space capable of presenting humanistic resources and critiques regarding how the sensory order of the human body is rearranged within transitional forms prior to the development of film technology.
