Minima Moralia(1951) is a collection of aphorisms in a diary format, in which Theodor W. Adorno (1903?1963) observes his daily life in the United States?where he fled to escape Nazi persecution?through a personal lens. In it, he reflects on his sense of alienation as an exiled outsider and laments his lonely position as an intellectual. While this work serves as an essay testifying to Adorno’s principles and beliefs, it can also be seen as a result of his research into global administration, given that the United States at the time took a proto-typical form of a superpower leading the waves of neoliberal globalization. During his stay in the U.S., Adorno perceives that barbaric violence is not confined to Auschwitz; rather, he identifies the “absolute unhappiness” inherent in late-capitalist society, where American ideology defines everything non-exchangeable as evil. Consequently, for Adorno, the United States functions less as a temporary site of exile and more as an allegory for modern society. This leads to a critical reflection on contemporary society, extending the work of Dialectic of Enlightenment(1947), co-authored with Max Horkheimer(1895?1973). Composed of 153 aphorisms, this book utilizes aesthetic mechanisms such as “negativity”(Negativitat) and “exaggeration” (Ubertreibung) to freely describe everyday experiences including love, marriage, divorce, labor, and technology. While there are many studies that comprehensively address Adorno’s philosophy and aesthetic theory by focusing on his theoretical works, research centered on his thoughts as expressed in his diary-style collection of essays, Minima Moralia, remains significantly insufficient. This paper aims to shed new light on the sorrow of the subject as manifested in everyday-aesthetic experiences within Adorno’s biographical work, Minima Moralia, in conjunction with his broader theories.
