The Activities of the Eight-Character Army (Bazijun) and the Reconstruction of the Southern Song Regime in the Early Twelfth Century
In the aftermath of the Jingkang Incident, the military system of the Northern Song collapsed, and various anti-Jin forces centered on local militias(yijun) emerged throughout North China. Among them, the Eight-Character Army (Bazijun) led by Wang Yan was one of the most representative examples. Originally a low-ranking military officer of the Northern Song, Wang Yan participated in campaigns to recover Hebei. Following a Jin counteroffensive, however, he retreated into the Taihang Mountains, where he gathered scattered troops and united various militia forces. The name “Eight-Character Army” derived from the eight characters tattooed on the faces of its soldiers: “Serve the country with a loyal heart, swear to kill the Jin invaders” (Chixin baoguo Shisha Jinzei). The Eight-Character Army was a military force dedicated to resisting the Jin and restoring the Song state. Through repeated campaigns against Jin forces in North China, Wang Yan established himself as a renowned anti-Jin commander. He later moved south and was incorporated into the Southern Song regime. During the Mingshou Rebellion, he remained loyal to the imperial house, and subsequently served under Zhang Jun, playing an important role in defending the Jinzhou region and safeguarding the strategic approaches to Sichuan. However, as military institutions were reorganized during the Shaoxing era, Wang Yan’s influence gradually declined, and he eventually relinquished his military command. The Eight-Character Army was then placed under the command of Liu Qi, reorganized as part of the Southern Song military establishment, and distinguished itself in major engagements such as the Battle of Shunchang. In time, it was absorbed into the core forces of the Southern Song central army. The history of the Eight-Character Army therefore illustrates the broader process by which local militia forces were incorporated into the centralized military system of the Southern Song state.
