Cognitive Mechanisms of Fans of Real-Person-Driven Virtual Idols - A Study Based on the Gap Structure between the “Virtual–Real” and Fan Experience
This study examines fans of the real-person-driven virtual idol group PLAVE, exploring how they sustain immersion within the gap between the virtual character and the real performer, or nakanohito, and through which pathways this gap operates. Prior research, which relies on a binary acceptance–rejection model, has failed to capture the complex, ongoing psychological adjustment fans undergo under conditions of boundary collapse. Drawing on semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 PLAVE fans and a qualitative thematic analysis, this study finds that fans’ psychological mechanisms unfold along a dynamic “trigger–rationalization–coexistence” pathway. Exposure to photographs of the nakanohito triggered intense emotional shock and ruptured immersion; fans then rationalized the gap through strategies of ongoing negotiation, active adjustment, and meaning reconstruction. Within community norms and interactive support, the gap was gradually normalized and shifted into a stage of coexistence. However, this process was non-linear, with fans moving repeatedly between stages depending on the situation. On this basis, the study proposes “virtual–real gap rupture” as a novel type of breakdown in real-person-driven virtual idols and delineates the characteristics of “2.5-dimensional fans.” By advancing the dynamic analytical model of “trigger–rationalization–coexistence,” it offers a new analytical category for explaining how fans actively and continuously adjust to the virtual–real gap, rather than passively accepting it, while providing practical implications for the idols’ operational strategies, information-disclosure management, and fan-community governance design.
