This study applies Suture Theory to the analysis of variety programs and theoretically reexamines the function of the MC. The analysis focuses on The King of Mask Singer, Running Man, and Single’s Inferno, each of which represents a distinct MC type and audience structure. Using the three-stage mechanism of “lack-stand-in-positioning,” which constitutes the core of Suture Theory, this study examines how the MC occupies an empty position at moments of on-site semantic rupture and repositions viewers in a stable viewing position. The findings show that suture in variety programs operates on two levels, which are as follows: on site and in editing. This study defines this structure as “double suture.” Through this analysis, the study suggests that Suture Theory can serve as a valid theoretical tool for analyzing the function of the MC.

본 논문은 봉합 이론(Suture Theory)을 예능 프로그램 분석에 적용하여, MC의 기능을 이론적으로 재조명한다. 분석 대상은 <복면가왕>, <런닝맨>, <솔로지옥>이며, 각 프로그램은 MC와 관객 구조의 서로 다른 유형을 대표한다. 봉합 이론의 핵심 기제인 ‘결여-대리-위치됨’의 3단계를 분석 틀로 삼아, MC가 현장의 의미 단절 순간에 어떻게 빈자리를 점유하고 시청자를 안정적인 위치에 재배치하는지를 살펴본다. 연구 결과, 예능 프로그램의 봉합은 현장과 편집이라는 두 층위에서 작동하며, 이 구조를 본 연구는 ‘이중 봉합’으로 명명한다. 이를 통해 봉합 이론이 MC 기능 분석의 유효한 이론적 도구가 될 수 있음을 제안한다.
