The proliferation of images driven by advanced digital technologies has shifted the paradigm of photographic creation from classical “production” to curatorial “rearrangement.” This study traces the recontextualization process of “found photography”—images floating without clear origins or contexts—and examines the structure of “secondary authorship,” a performative power that emerges within this void. To this end, this paper explores the archival practices of Joachim Schmid and Lee Shulman, using Umberto Eco’s information theory and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concept of language-game rules as primary analytical frameworks. The findings indicate that their curatorial strategies do not operate as mutually exclusive binaries, but rather function as a continuous aesthetic spectrum. Schmid’s approach presents a path of structural anatomy by typologically arranging anonymous photographs to expose the systems of visual culture, while Shulman’s method employs emotional direction to build nostalgia and affective immersion before destabilizing it through retrospective intervention to expose historical absence. These practices collectively expand the scope of archival practice as complementary modalities within the same spectrum. Consequently, contemporary authorship is redefined not as a fixed entity but as a performative function that actively designs exhibition rules. Furthermore, photographic indexicality is reconfigured; it no longer resides in past physical traces but is woven retrospectively as a form of “relational authenticity” within the network of rearrangement structured by the secondary author. By expanding the discourse of found photography into an analysis of the power mechanisms that organize truth and memory this study offers a practical compass for contemporary visual culture studies.

디지털 기술 고도화에 따른 이미지 과잉 현상은 사진 창작의 패러다임을 고전적 ‘생산’에서 큐레토리얼 ‘재배치’로 전환시켰다. 본 연구는 기원과 맥락을 상실한 채 부유하는 ‘발견된 사진(Found Photography)’의 재맥락화 과정을 추적하고 그 공백에서 발생하는 수행적 권력인 ‘이차적 저자성(Secondary Authorship)’의 구조를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 움베르토 에코(Umberto Eco)의 정보이론과 루드비히 비트겐슈타인(Ludwig Wittgenstein)의 언어게임 규칙을 준거 삼아 요아힘 슈미트(Joachim Schmid)와 리 슐만(Lee Shulman)의 아카이브 실천을 고찰하였다. 분석 결과, 이들의 큐레토리얼 전략은 상호 배타적인 대립 항이 아니라 연속적인 미학적 스펙트럼으로 기능한다. 슈미트가 익명의 사진을 유형학적으로 배열하여 시각 문화 시스템을 노출하는 구조적 분석의 경로를 제시하는 양상과 슐만이 향수와 정서적 몰입을 구축한 뒤 사후적 개입을 통해 역사적 부재를 폭로하는 정서적 연출을 취하는 양상은 아카이브 실천의 진폭을 유기적으로 확장하는 상호보완적 양태다. 결과적으로 동시대 저자성은 고정된 실체가 아니라 전시 규칙을 능동적으로 설계하는 수행적 기능으로 재정의된다. 아울러 사진의 지표성 또한 과거의 물리적 흔적에 머무르는 것이 아니라 이차적 저자가 조직한 재배치 구조망 속에서 사후적으로 직조되는 ‘관계적 진실성(Relational Authenticity)’으로 재편됨을 입증한다. 본 연구는 발견된 사진 논의를 진실과 기억을 조직하는 권력 메커니즘 분석으로 확장하여 동시대 시각 문화 연구의 실천적 방향성을 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
