A Study of White Marble Buddhist Sculptures in Dingzhou during the Late Northern Wei and Eastern Wei Periods : Focusing on Buddha and Standing Bodhisattva Images
This study examines the white marble Buddhist sculptures of the Dingzhou region in Hebei during the late Northern Wei and Eastern Wei periods, focusing on the typological classification of Buddha and Bodhisattva images, their stylistic development, and the reception of external influences. By analyzing both stylistic changes and their background, this study seeks to clarify the formation and development of Dingzhou white marble sculpture. The results indicate that the earliest white marble sculptures strongly inherited the traditions of local gilt-bronze Buddhist images. Features such as four-legged square-base pedestals, openwork carving, angular drapery folds, and the elongated proportions of the Xiugu qingxiang style demonstrate the continuation of earlier sculptural traditions and suggest that Dingzhou white marble sculpture developed from regional artistic foundations rather than through the direct adoption of metropolitan styles. Subsequently, the influence of the Longmen Grottoes was incorporated into Dingzhou sculpture. Drapery-hanging pedestal motifs associated with Guyang Cave and Middle Binyang Cave were adopted and combined with existing local traditions, producing new sculptural forms. During the Eastern Wei period, additional stylistic elements entered the region following the transfer of the political center to Ye. Angular drapery folds were gradually replaced by drapery rendered with two parallel incised lines, while Bodhisattva images adopted Ye-related features such as scarves passing through a jade ring. These developments demonstrate that Dingzhou white marble sculptures formed a distinctive regional style through the selective adoption and reinterpretation of artistic elements from Qingzhou, Luoyang, and Ye. The study contributes to a better understanding of the development of Buddhist art in Hebei during the Northern Dynasties and the formation of Northern Qi Buddhist art.
