A Reappraisal of the Ideological Lineage of the Transformation Tableaux of the Contemplation Sutra in Tang and Song China
This study examines the iconographic changes in the Transformation Tableaux of the Contemplation Sutra (觀無量壽經變相圖) from the Tang and Song dynasties, with particular focus on reappraising existing interpretations of the ideological background of Song-dynasty examples. Tang-dynasty Transformation Tableaux of the Contemplation Sutra directly reflect the Pure Land doctrine of Shandao (善導, 613–681). Shandao defined the objects of Amitābha’s salvific vow as ordinary beings burdened with afflictions, and divided the Sixteen Contemplations into dingshan (定善, contemplation in meditative absorption) and sanshan (散善, wholesome acts in ordinary states of mind). This interpretation is directly reflected in the iconographic composition of Tang-dynasty examples, including Mogao Cave 431 at Dunhuang. Notably, the depiction in Cave 431 of beings amid hellish imagery—sword-trees and boiling cauldrons—rising on clouds to be reborn in the Pure Land is interpreted here as a visual embodiment of Shandao’s core doctrine: that Amitābha’s salvific vow-power (本願力) is activated without exception for anyone at the moment of death. Previous scholarship has emphasized the influence of Tiantai Zhiyi (天台智顗) and Siming Zhili (四明知禮) as the ideological background for Song-dynasty examples. This study argues, however, that the lineage of Chan-Pure Land dual practice (chanjing shuangxiu, 禪 淨雙修) extending from the Tang monk Cimin Sanzang Huiri (慈愍三藏 慧日, 680–748) to the Northern Song Vinaya master Lingzhi Yuanzhao (靈芝元照, 1048–1116) played a more decisive role. While inheriting Shandao's view that all nine grades of rebirth are attainable by ordinary beings, Yuanzhao proposed a distinctive reclassification of the nine grades—not according to the practitioner's capacity in this world, but according to their mode of existence after rebirth in the Pure Land: assemblies of bodhisattvas (菩薩衆), śrāvakas (聲聞衆), and laypeople (人民衆). This reinterpretation applies Huiri’s concept of lijì yīnguǒ (離繫因果)— the principle that the depth and type of one’s practice determines the outcome after rebirth— to the exegesis of the nine grades. This distinctive iconographic interpretation is concretely embodied in the nine grades of rebirth scene of the Shiliuguan bianxiangtu (十六觀變相圖) at Amidaji, Japan. Furthermore, this ideological lineage extended beyond China. The Goryeo monk Uicheon (義天, 1055–1101) studied Pure Land doctrine directly under Yuanzhao and subsequently republished in Korea the Jingtu ji (淨土集) that Yuanzhao had originally disseminated in Korea. This confirms that the Chan-Pure Land dual practice tradition initiated by Huiri contributed to shaping the broader foundation of Pure Land thought across East Asia.
