This article examines the nature of China’s partnership diplomacy through South Korea’s case. In particular, it focuses on the similarities between modern China’s partnership and ancient China’s tributary system. It found a notable similarity in China’s treatment of South Korea between the current partnership and China’s ancient tributary systems that treated ancient Korea, the Joseon dynasty, as its protégé. China’s persistent demands for the ‘three noes’ (no additional deployment of the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) battery, no participation in the U.S. missile defence network, and no pursuit of U.S.-South Korea-Japan security cooperation) cannot be easily explained by the regular partner cases around the world. South Korea misunderstood that China’s partnership included security cooperation as well.
