This research explores the life of K (pseudonym), a Korean-American adoptee, to understand her life experiences as both a Korean and an American within the historical context of overseas adoption that began after the Korean War. K who was adopted to the United States through Holt Children's Services, provided a narrative of her life—from her first nine years in Korea to her journey into old age in America. Her story was analyzed using the Narrative Inquiry method (Clandinin·Connelly, 2000). The study confirms that K has navigated life with her own unique cultural identity, and that these diverse experiences have shaped a life that is singularly her own. For the researcher, this study served as a process of learning to practice respect for humanity through the lens of an individual's life experience. This study moves beyond a mere analysis of the individual life of a Korean adoptee who left the country in the late 1950s and was adopted into the United States. Instead, it underscores the broader expectation that Korean society will cultivate a social foundation that acknowledges the existence of others with diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences, thereby advancing respect for cultural diversity

본 연구는 6·25 전쟁 이후 시작된 해외 입양의 역사를 통해 생겨난 미국 입양인케이(가명)가 한국인으로서, 미국인으로서 어떤 삶을 살아왔는지를 이해하는 데있다. 케이가 한국에서 9살까지 살았던 경험과 홀트아동복지회를 통해 미국으로입양되어 이제 노년으로 접어든 삶의 경험을 내러티브 탐구 방법으로 분석했다. 케이는 한국인으로서 또는 미국인으로서 자신만의 고유한 문화적 정체성을 가지고 살아왔으며 그러한 다양한 삶의 경험은 케이 자신만의 개별적이고 고유한 삶을만들었다는 것을 확인할 수 있는 연구였다. 케이의 삶의 경험을 통해 연구자로서인간 존중을 실천하려고 노력하는 배움의 과정이었다. 본 연구는 단순히 1950년대 후반 이후 한국을 떠나 미국으로 입양된 개인의 삶을 개별적 가치로 분석하는 데 그치지 않는다. 다양한 문화적 배경과 삶의 경험을지닌 타인의 존재를 인정하고, 이를 통해 문화적 다양성을 존중하는 사회적 기반을 확장하게 될 것을 기대한다.
