This study critically examines the limitations of methodological nationalism and homeland-centered perspective found in existing research on the Korean diaspora, and to propose the concept of “K-diaspora” as a new analytical framework that transcends these limitations. Existing research on the Korean diaspora has tended to view overseas Koreans as a community defined by bloodlines and ethnicity, or to interpret them as national assets centered on South Korea. Such approaches fail to adequately explain the complex identities and transnational practices that the diaspora has developed in their countries of residence, and reveal limitations in capturing the formation of new communities that are evolving amid global mobility and multicultural realities. Accordingly, this study seeks to reconceptualize the diaspora not as a fixed ethnic group but as an open and fluid network formed within urban spaces and cultural practices. This paper reviews the theoretical currents in diaspora studies and the developmental trajectory of Korean diaspora research while critically analyzing studies on return migration and transnationalism. In conclusion, this study presents the K-Diaspora not merely an extension of the concept of overseas Korean, but as a new methodological shift to explain cultural connectivity and practical citizenship formed in global urban spaces. This is significant in that it serves as a critical analytical framework for understanding mobility, cultural coexistence, and the formation of new communities in the era of polycrisis, transcending the ethnonationalism paradigm centered on bloodlines and nationality.

본 연구는 기존 한인 디아스포라 연구가 지닌 방법론적 국민주의와 본국 중심주의의 한계를 비판적으로 검토하고, 이를 넘어서는 새로운 분석 틀로서 ‘K-디아스포라’ 개념을 제안하는 데 목적이 있다. 기존의 한인 디아스포라 연구는 재외동포를 혈통과 민족 중심의 공동체로 이해하거나, 한국 중심의 국가적 자산으로 해석하는 경향이 강했다. 이러한 접근은 디아스포라가 거주국에서 형성해 온 복합적정체성과 초국적 실천을 충분히 설명하지 못하며, 글로벌 이동성과 다문화적 현실속에서 변화하는 새로운 공동체 형성을 포착하는 데 한계를 드러낸다. 이에 본 연구는 디아스포라를 고정된 민족 집단이 아니라 도시 공간과 문화적 실천 속에서형성되는 개방적이고 유동적인 네트워크로 재개념화하고자 한다. 본 논문은 디아스포라 연구의 이론적 흐름과 한인 디아스포라 연구의 발전 과정을 검토하고, 귀환 이주 연구와 초국적 연구를 비판적으로 분석한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 K-디아스포라를 단순한 재외동포 개념의 확장이 아니라, 글로벌 도시 공간에서 형성되는 문화적 연결성과 실천적 시민권을 설명하기위한 새로운 방법론적 전환으로 제시한다. 이는 혈통과 국적 중심의 민족적 국민주의 패러다임을 넘어, 다중 위기(poly-crisis) 시대의 이동성과 문화적 공존, 그리고 새로운 공동체 형성을 이해하기 위한 비판적 분석 틀이라는 점에서 의의를지닌다.
