ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is an evaluation framework originally developed for for-profit companies, but its scope of application has recently expanded to non-profit organizations. However, the two types of organizations possess fundamental differences in their purpose of existence, profit distribution structure, and stakeholder composition. If an ESG framework based on for-profit organizations is applied directly to non-profit organizations without considering these structural differences, ESG may end up merely satisfying formal requirements that are disconnected from the mission. Accordingly, this study compared the three domains of ESG—Environment, Society, and Governance—between the two types of organizations from three perspectives: purpose, structure, and application. The results confirmed that while ESG in for-profit organizations ultimately aims for financial value, ESG in non-profit organizations aims for the achievement of their mission; this difference in purpose is the fundamental factor leading to differences in structure and application. This implies that ESG in non-profit organizations should be evaluated based on their mission rather than financial performance. Therefore, this study proposes a "mission materiality diagnosis" as a specific method to assess how important each indicator is to the achievement of the organization's mission and to select its importance. This study is significant in that it presents the necessity of ESG evaluation considering the nature of non-profit organizations and proposes a practical analytical framework for this purpose.

ESG(환경·사회·거버넌스)는 본래 영리기업을 위해 만들어진 평가 체계로, 최근에는 그 적용 범위가 비영리조직으로 확산되고 있다. 그러나 두 조직은 존재 목적·수익 배분 구조·이해관계자 구성에서 근본적인 차이를 지니며, 이러한 구조적 차이를 고려하지 않은 채 영리조직 기반의 ESG 체계를 비영리조직에 그대로 적용할 경우 ESG가 미션과 단절된 형식적 요건 충족에 그칠 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 두 조직 간에 ESG의 환경·사회·거버넌스 세 영역을 ‘목적·구조·적용’의 세 가지 관점에서 비교하였다. 연구 결과, 영리조직의 ESG는 궁극적으로 재무적 가치를 지향하는 반면 비영리조직의 ESG는 미션 달성을 지향하며, 이 목적의 차이가 구조와 적용의 차이를 낳는 근본 요인임을 확인하였다. 이는 비영리조직의 ESG가 재무가 아니라 미션을 기준으로 평가되어야 함을 의미한다. 이에 본 연구는 각 지표가 조직의 미션 달성에 얼마나 중요한지를 평가하여 그 중요도를 선별하는 ‘미션중대성 진단’을 그 구체적 방법으로 제안한다. 본 연구는 비영리조직의 본질을 고려한 ESG 평가의 필요성을 제시하고, 이를 위한 실무적 분석 틀을 함께 제안했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
