Maritime cultural heritage exhibitions have long relied on artifacts, photographs, and text-based displays, limiting their capacity to represent core elements such as the temporal dynamics of marine environments, the procedural structures of local maritime lifeways, and the collective memory systems of coastal communities. Existing exhibitions commonly present physical and ecological data (e.g., temperature, salinity, wave height, current speed) separately from experiential and memory-based cultural data, creating constraints for visitors attempting to understand the structural and processual characteristics of maritime cultural heritage. As recent scholarly discourse increasingly emphasizes immateriality, process-oriented interpretation, and sensory–information-based approaches, there is a growing need to reorganize existing exhibition paradigms toward data-driven and sensory-driven models. This study aims to address these limitations by establishing a Sensory-driven Maritime Exhibition System, designed to transform key regional maritime cultural components—marine environmental datasets, navigational and fishing procedures, place names, symbolic cues, and experiential indicators—into sensory exhibition elements. The research employed a four-step methodology: (1) extracting core variable sets through integrated analysis of natural science data (marine environment) and social science data (lifeways and memory); (2) designing data– sensory mapping rules to structure sensory outputs across visual, auditory, tactile, and vestibular modalities; (3) modeling an XR- and digital-heritage–based exhibition prototype; and (4) validating exhibition effects using UX metrics, including eye-tracking, dwell time, interaction frequency, and affective responses. The results indicate that the proposed sensory-driven system effectively converts time-series marine environmental changes and lifeway procedures into sensory stimuli that enhance visitors’ cognitive processing depth, immersion levels, and information recall. Consistency across sensory channels, the use of procedure-based narrative structures, and repeated presentation of identity and memory-based cues were found to play significant roles in strengthening affective responses and interpretive comprehension. Furthermore, XR-based spatial configurations provided an appropriate technical foundation for reconstructing structural characteristics of regional maritime cultures within an exhibition environment. This study contributes a conceptual and methodological framework for shifting maritime cultural heritage exhibitions from static, artifact-centered models to data-driven and sensory-driven approaches. It also offers practical implications for strengthening regional maritime museums’ exhibition planning capacities, advancing maritime education and experiential content development, and supporting the reconstruction of regional maritime identity.
