This study investigates how ideologies surrounding English shape linguistic justice in Singapore and South Korea. While English functions as a global lingua franca that enables participation in international domains, it also reinforces inequalities through the continued authority of standard norms and native speakerism. Conceptualising native speakerism as a persistent institutional structure within global English language teaching, the study adopts a comparative approach to examine its operation across two sociolinguistic contexts. In Singapore, English-knowing bilingualism has institutionalised English as a public and locally owned resource, allowing English to function simultaneously as a global communicative medium and a locally meaningful language, with the increasing recognition of Singlish as a marker of identity and socio- cultural capital. In South Korea, however, English operates as a competitive gatekeeping language connected to class reproduction and the pursuit of native-like authenticity, even as culturally meaningful practices such as Konglish emerge in everyday use. The study concludes by suggesting that enhancing linguistic justice in South Korea requires reframing English as a shared resource and recognising local users as legitimate English speakers.
