Korean society stands at a critical juncture where productivity is declining due to aging and low birth rates. To sustain and develop domestic industries, it has become essential to find effective strategies for the successful settlement of foreign workers currently residing in Korea. This study sought to identify the specific triggers and turning points that motivate foreign workers to form a definitive intent to settle in Korea. This research was conducted with the expectation that understanding these crucial determinants would contribute to formulating effective strategies for corporations and the broader society to support the long-term settlement of the foreign workforce. The study adopted a qualitative research methodology, conducting in-depth interviews with eight research participants who had expressed a firm intention to settle in Korea. Among various leisure pursuits, the research particularly noted that sports (physical activities) and hobbies served as major catalysts in solidifying their intent to settle in Korean life. By presenting practical cases demonstrating the role of participation in these activities in fostering a sense of belonging and influencing the ultimate decision to settle, the study derived substantive measures for the settlement of foreign workers in Korean society. The research findings yielded the following key recommendations for employers, the workers themselves, and local communities: 1. Recommendations for Employers (Corporations): Companies need to proactively organize programs and create an atmosphere where foreign workers can immediately participate in sports programs or hobby activities upon entry into Korea. Furthermore, pre-entry education should be conducted to emphasize the importance of hobby engagement. 2. Recommendations for Local Communities: Local communities should develop leisure programs that are accessible to and encourage the voluntary participation of foreign residents. In conclusion, this study confirmed the significant role of hobby activities, such as sports, in the settlement of foreign workers in Korean society. The findings thus provide valuable reference points for the formulation of policies aimed at facilitating foreign worker settlement.

우리 사회는 현재 고령화와 저출산으로 인해 생산성이 저하하는 중요한 기로에 서 있다. 국내 산업의 유지와 발전을 위해 한국에 와 있는 외국인 노동자들이 잘 정착할 수 있는 방안을 찾아야 할 시점이 되었다. 본 연구는 한국에서 생활하는 외국인 노동자들이 어떤 구체적인 계기와 전환점을 통해 한국에 정착하려는 의지를 갖게 되었는지 그 배경을 찾고자 하였다. 이러한 결정적 계기를 아는 것이 이들을 채용하는 기업과 우리 사회가 외국인 노동자의 장기적인 정착을 효과적으로 돕는 전략을 수립하는 데 기여할 것이라는 기대로 본 연구를 진행하였다. 본 연구는 질적 연구 방법론을 채택하였으며, 한국 정착 의지를 확정적으로 밝힌 8명의 연구대상자를 대상으로 심층 면접을 실시하였다. 다양한 여가 활동 중에서도 특히 스포츠(운동) 활동이 한국에서의 정착 의지를 굳히는 주요 촉매제가 되었다는 점을 주목하였다. 운동 참여가 한국 생활에 대한 소속감과 궁극적인 정착 결정에 역할을 하고 있음을 실질적인 사례를 제시함으로써, 외국인 노동자들이 우리 사회에 정착할 수 있는 실질적인 방안을 도출하였다. 연구 결과는 고용주(기업)와 노동자 본인에게 다음과 같은 중요한 제언을 제시하였다: 1. 고용주(기업)를 위한 제언: 기업은 외국인 노동자가 한국에 입국하는 즉시 운동 프로그램이나 취미 활동을 즉각적으로 참여할 수 있는 선제적인 프로그램 편성과 분위기를 조성할 필요가 있으며, 특히 입국 전 교육을 취미활동에 대한 교육을 실시하여 취미활동의 중요성을 제시할 필요가 있다. 2. 지역사회에 대한 제언: 지역사회가 외국인이 참여할 수 있는 여가 프로그램을 개발하여 그들이 자발적으로 참여할 수 있도록 할 필요가 있다. 결론적으로, 본 연구를 통해 외국인 노동자들의 한국 사회 정착에 스포츠와 같은 취미 활동이 역할을 하고 있다는 점에서 외국인 노동자 정착을 위한 정책 수립에 참고할만한 방안이 제시되었다 판단된다.
