A Qualitative Case Study of the 50-Plus Generation’s Participation in Resource Circulation Activities : Changes in Environmental Awareness and the Meaning of Social Participation
The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of the 50-plus generation participating in resource circulation activities and to understand how these experiences are related to changes in environmental awareness and the meaning of social participation. For this purpose, this study analyzed individual interview data from nine participants who took part in the Local Resource Circulation Practice Group at the Seodaemun 50 Plus Center. A qualitative case study method was employed, and meaningful units were extracted and categorized through repeated reading of the interview transcripts. The findings revealed seven major themes. First, participants entered the activity with diverse motivations, including a desire for social contribution after retirement, participation in a Boram job program, prior interest in environmental issues, family recommendations, and curiosity about local community activities. Second, education and field-based activities helped participants reinterpret the climate crisis and resource circulation issues as concrete problems connected to everyday life. Third, participants embodied resource circulation practices in daily life, such as reducing single-use items, improving waste separation practices, collecting milk cartons and bottle caps, and using eco-friendly household products. Fourth, individual practices expanded into collective practices through team-based activities and interactions with local residents. Fifth, the Boram job program functioned as an institutional pathway into participation, while also revealing tensions between financial compensation and voluntary engagement. Sixth, participants recognized the limitations of individual practice and emphasized the need for institutional support, including expanded collection points, continuous education, and stronger roles for local governments and businesses. Seventh, participants interpreted resource circulation activities as experiences of new learning, relationship-building, recovery of a productive role, and contribution to the local community during a period of life transition marked by retirement, business closure, and changes in everyday life. This study suggests that resource circulation activities can function not only as environmental practices but also as a community-based participation model that promotes both changes in environmental awareness and the formation of meaning in social participation among the 50-plus generation.
