The Effects of Stress and Compensatory Consumption on Tourism Satisfaction and Repurchase Intention : Exploring Directions for Demand-Oriented Tourism Policy
This study aims to empirically examine the effects of perceived stress on tourism satisfaction and repurchase intention through the mediating role of compensatory consumption, thereby exploring directions for demand-oriented tourism policy. In particular, it analyzes the relationship between different ways of perceiving stress and types of compensatory consumption, as well as the differential effects of such consumption on tourism satisfaction and repurchase intention. An online survey was conducted among 244 respondents who had experienced domestic tourism during the pandemic period from 2019 to 2021, when suppressed desires for activity and stress caused by restrictions were particularly intense. Perceived stress was measured by distinguishing between positive and negative stress, while compensatory consumption was categorized into positive and negative compensatory consumption. The effects of these variables on satisfaction and repurchase intention were then examined. The results show that perceived stress had significant effects on positive and negative compensatory consumption, and that the type of compensatory consumption varied depending on how stress was perceived. Positive compensatory consumption had a significant effect on tourism satisfaction but did not directly affect repurchase intention. In contrast, negative compensatory consumption did not affect satisfaction but had a significant effect on repurchase intention. Satisfaction was identified as the strongest predictor of repurchase intention. This study extends tourism motivation theory by empirically identifying the structural relationship among stress, compensatory consumption, satisfaction, and repurchase intention. From a practical perspective, the findings suggest the need for differentiated marketing strategies according to the type of compensatory consumption. From a policy perspective, they highlight considerations for developing stress-relief-oriented tourism policies aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life and revitalizing the tourism industry.
