This article focuses on the appearance of ‘leprosarium’ as a phenomenon in the “colonial publicity” and analyzes the interactions and effects within Christianity involved in the process. In the emergence of ‘leprosarium’ as a public domain in the society of colonial during Japanese occupation, there was not only the relationship between colonizer and the colonized, but also the mixed phenomenon within Christianity. In Chapter 2. I examined how bodies of patient with Hansen disease were colonized and subject to social-structural violence both inside and outside of the leprosariums, which were established and operated in competition and cooperation between the colonial government and western Christian missionaries (or mission society). In addition, I showed the social perception and response to patients with Hansen disease relating to the colony or village formation of patients with Hansen disease in local community. In chapter 3, I examined the movement of Christianity around Sorokdo and the inner landscape of the faith community through the records of Sorokdo Church and the writings of patients with Hansen disease in 『Bible Joseon』, and examined the religious horizon of Son Yang Won, who influenced the reconstruction of Sorokdo Church after liberation.

이 글은 “식민지 공공영역”의 한 현상으로서 ‘나요양소’의 출현에 주목하고 그 과정에 개입된 기독교 내부의 상호작용과 그 효과를 분석하는 데 초점을 두고자 한다. 여기서는 일제강점기 식민지 공공영역의 실체로서 나요양소를 규명하기보다는 일제의 식민체제에서 한센병 예방과 한센병 환자의 구제라는 영역에서 나타나는 정치적･사회적･종교적 힘들이 어떤 방식으로 교차하고 ‘공속(共屬)’의 관계를 형성했는지에 주목하고자 한다. 이런 접근은 식민지 공공성이라는 은유 장치를 통해서 나요양소의 출현에 따른 격리-생활이라는 한센병의 사회적 조건이 어떤 방식으로 식민지 조선에서 형성되었는지에 대한 물음을 가지고 과연 무엇이 당시 한센병 환자의 삶을 주조하는 데 영향을 미쳤는지, 그리고 그 과정에 개입된 기독교의 영향은 어떤 방식으로 발휘되었는지에 대한 분석의 필요성에서 비롯한다. 이러한 문제의식 속에서 2장에서는 일제강점기 식민화의 장소로서 한센병 환자의 신체에 주목한다. 근대 이전의 한국사회에서 한센병 환자에 대한 사회적 인식을 살펴보고 근대사회로의 진입과 함께 한센병 환자에 대한 사회적 차별과 배제가 이루어지는 사회적 배경, 그리고 ‘나요양소’의 안과 밖에서 한센병 환자의 신체는 어떻게 표상되는지를 살펴본다. 3장에서는 소록도교회 기록물과 『성서조선』에 실린 한센병 환자의 글 등을 통해서 소록도를 둘러싼 기독교의 움직임과 신앙공동체 내면의 풍경을 살펴보고, 해방 후 소록도교회 재건에 영향을 준 손양원의 종교적 행보를 살펴본다.
