This study aims to explore how elementary school teachers guide students living in residential care facilities and under what contextual conditions such guidance is enacted. To this end, a qualitative case study was conducted with four elementary school teachers who had experience teaching students in residential care, and data were collected from September to December 2025. The findings indicate that the teachers interpreted students’ maladaptive behaviors as a language of survival and re-positioned them as existential subjects, while simultaneously practicing a balanced form of guidance that combined patience and unconditional support with consistent procedures and universal principles. In addition, by cultivating a classroom community culture that emphasized hospitality and mutual bonds rather than competition, they constructed a peaceful space in which students could remain safely. Four contextual conditions surrounding this guidance were identified. First, a teacher community that functioned both as a space of emotional solidarity and as a barrier grounded in meritocracy; second, relationships with residential care facilities characterized by both partnership and communicative disconnection; third, a school system that provided practical support yet lacked structures to prevent teacher burnout; and fourth, opportunities for mutual growth that led teachers to critically reflect on their own educational existence. These pedagogical practices for students in residential care reposition those from vulnerable backgrounds as existential subjects with their own narratives, and demonstrate a form of the hidden curriculum that reconstitutes the school as a community where individuals can remain together despite their deficiencies and differences. They also carry profound educational significance in that they represent a process through which teachers reconstruct their identity as relational practitioners, moving beyond the role of mere instructional experts.

본 연구는 초등교사의 양육보호시설 학생 지도 양상과 그 맥락적 조건을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 시설보호 학생 지도 경험을 지닌 초등교사 4인을 대상으로 질적 사례연구를 수행하였으며, 자료 수집은 2025년 9월부터 12월까지 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 교사들은학생의 부적응 행동을 생존의 언어로 해독하며 이들을 실존적 주체로 재정립해 나갔고, 인내와 전폭적 지지를 통해 학생과 특별한 관계를 맺는 동시에, 일관된 절차와 보편적 원칙을 병행하는 균형적 지도를 실천하였다. 또한 경쟁 대신 환대와 유대를 강조하는 학급 공동체 문화를 조성함으로써 학생이 안전하게 머물 수 있는 평화로운 공간을 구축하였다. 학생 지도를둘러싼 맥락적 조건으로는 네 가지가 도출되었다. 첫째, 정서적 연대의 장이면서 동시에 능력주의에 기반한 장벽이 공존하는 교사공동체, 둘째, 파트너쉽과 소통 단절의 양면성을 지닌 양육보호 시설과의 관계, 셋째, 실질적 도움을 제공하지만 교사 소진 방지 체계 미비한 학교 시스템, 넷째, 교사로 하여금 교육적 존재 이유를 성찰하게 하는 상호 성장 계기이다. 이러한양육보호시설 학생 지도 실천은 취약한 배경을 지닌 학생을 각자의 서사를 지닌 실존적 주체로 재위치시키고, 학교를 서로의 결핍과 차이를 안고도 함께 머물 수 있는 공동체로 재구성하는 잠재적 교육과정의 실천임을 보여준다. 이는 교사가 단지 교과 지도의 전문가를 넘어관계적 실천가로서의 정체성을 재구성해 나가는 과정이라는 점에서 깊은 교육적 의미를 지닌다.
