A Narrative-Semiotic Analysis of Disability-Related Ijime in Japanese Animation - A case study of <A Silent Voice> -
This study analyzes the semantic structure of disability-related Japanese bullying (ijime) depicted in the Japanese animated film A Silent Voice(2016), and examines how Japan’s historical culture of social exclusion is reproduced within contemporary animated narrative. To this end, the study reviews theoretical frameworks such as mura-hachibu, higokumin, meiwaku culture, and eugenic perceptions of disability, and employs Greimas’s narrative semiotics as its analytical framework. Methodologically, the analysis applies the semiotic square at the deep-structural level to derive the axiological opposition between inclusion and exclusion. At the surface-structural level, actantial modeling and narrative program analysis are used to examine character relations and narrative development. At the discursive level, recurring signs such as the “X” mark, communication notebooks, sign language, bridges, water, and flowers are analyzed in terms of their processes of meaning production. The findings indicate that the deep structure of the work is organized around a binary opposition between inclusion and exclusion. Disability-related bullying is not represented as an individual conflict but rather as structural violence generated through collective mechanisms of social exclusion within the community. Furthermore, the protagonist Shoya transforms from perpetrator to a subject of redemption and reconciliation, and the narrative moves from exclusion toward coexistence. At the discursive level, each recurring sign produces meanings associated with social isolation, communication, relational restoration, and healing. In conclusion, this study interprets disability-related bullying in A Silent Voice as a culturally mediated reproduction of Japan’s historical structures of social exclusion. By analyzing meaning production in animated narrative through a semiotic framework, it demonstrates how social othering is constructed in visual storytelling.
