A Study on Novels Based on the People's Revolutionary Party Incident : Narrative as the Appropriation and Cracking of History
This article explores the aspects of historical appropriation and rupture, focusing on novels and other works that artistically portray the historical tragedy known as the ‘The People’s Revolutionary Party Incident (Inhyeokdang Incident).’ Representative works that artistically appropriate the ‘history’ of the ‘Inhyeokdang Incident’ as an example of state violence are Kim Won-il’s novel ‘Blue Soul’ (2005), Kwon Yeo-sun’s novel ‘The House of Clay Figurines’ (2014), and Choi Eun-young’s short story ‘Sister, My Little, Sunae Sister’ (2014). This article examines the characteristics and significance of the narrative strategies in these three novels, drawing upon concepts such as Paul Ricoeur’s “threefold mimesis.” Along with these novels, an intertextual analysis was attempted with Park Geon-ung’s comic book ‘That Spring – The Story of 8 Death Row Inmates of the People’s Revolutionary Party’ (2018) and George Ogle’s memoirs and true-story novels, ‘Prayers for the Innocent’, ‘The Flesh’, and ‘The Teahouse’ (2003), which belong to the non-fiction genre. These historical reenactment narratives construct the reality of the historical event known as the People's Revolutionary Party Incident and elucidate historical truth through their respective narrative strategies. By appropriating the historical tragedy of the People's Revolutionary Party Incident as literary subject matter, they create cracks in the concealed and distorted official history. This act of creating ruptures(cracking) can be seen as the artistic power and social efficacy demonstrated by historical novels. Furthermore, it can be viewed as an effort to strongly control the repetition of tragedy and overcome historical trauma through the repetition of tragic memories.
