This study analyzed news articles from The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the New York Daily News to compare political news coverage of a female incumbent and a male challenger. Using the Clinton vs. Spencer race as a case that offers a particularly suitable context for examining whether incumbency mitigates gender stereotypes in news coverage, this study examined the prominence of coverage, news frames, candidate quotations, and mentions of presidential bids. The results reveal that the female incumbent, Clinton, received both a greater volume and more prominent placement of coverage than her male opponent, Spencer. Her policy positions and campaign agenda were well covered. Although the media showed interest in Clinton’s personal life and appearance, she did not receive significantly more attention in these areas than her male opponent. Overall, this study concludes that a female incumbent with relatively high name recognition and fundraising capabilities can offset gender stereotypes to some extent. By examining the case of a female incumbent and a male challenger, this study extends the literature on gender and political communication by offering further insight into how gender and incumbency shape political news coverage.
