A Comparative Analysis of Popular Music Education Curricula Across Nation : Focusing on Structural Differences in Industry Linkage and Educational Philosophy
This study comparatively analyzes the popular music education curricula of Korean and Chinese universities to empirically identify structural differences and industry linkages between the two educational systems. Analysis of 210 courses from two Korean arts high schools, four Korean universities, and three Chinese universities as of 2023 reveals that Korea employs a practice-oriented education model (50.5% practical training, 24.7% basic theory, 24.8% industry application), while China maintains an art-centered education model (40.2% basic theory, 34.6% practical creation, 25.2% industry application). Korean popular music education is specialized from the high school level, closely linked with the industry through industry-academia collaborative projects and capstone systems, though it shows relative weakness in foundational arts education. Conversely, China maintains systematic theoretical education centered on conservatories, but practical industry linkage remains in its early stages. The educational systems of both countries reflect different cultural industry strategies (K-POP and C-pop) with Korea focusing on cultivating "industry-oriented professionals" and China emphasizing “artistically-oriented creators”. This study suggests that Korea's industrial adaptability and China's artistic completeness are complementary, proposing that future East Asian popular music education should secure global competitiveness through balancing artistic excellence and industrial practicality. The findings provide theoretical foundations for understanding popular music education as a complex domain integrating cultural policy, industry demands, and artistic traditions, offering practical implications for curriculum development, industry-academia collaboration enhancement, and educational policy reform in both countries.
