How Does Everyday Urban Spaces Become K-Pop Content? : Spatial Strategies in the Music Video 'REDRED' by the Multinational Boy Group CORTIS
This study examines how everyday spaces are reconstructed and consumed in contemporary K-POP content through a case analysis of CORTIS’s music video “REDRED.” Drawing on de Certeau’s theory of everyday practice, Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, and Debord’s theory of the spectacle, the study proposes an analytical framework of spatial reconstruction–cultural capitalization–spectacularization. Using qualitative textual analysis, the research investigates spatial composition, performance, editing rhythm, and platform-based circulation within the music video. The findings show that everyday locations such as Korean barbecue restaurants, arcades, streets, and crosswalks are transformed into performative content spaces through filming and choreography. These spaces are repeatedly reproduced across digital platforms and function as forms of cultural and symbolic capital within fandom culture. Fan challenge videos, spatial reenactments, and HYBE’s popup-space strategy further demonstrate that space operates not merely as a background setting, but as a platform interface that organizes participation and consumption. In addition, audiovisual editing and repetitive platform circulation transform these everyday spaces into spectacles and consumable images. Ultimately, this study argues that recent K-POP content is shifting from stage-centered performance toward experiential and platform-oriented strategies grounded in everyday spaces. It further suggests that space functions as a key cultural resource organizing meaning production, fandom participation, and image consumption in the contemporary K-POP industry.
