This study examines sinmuyong, a core asset of Korean modern dance, from the perspective of contemporary intangible heritage discourse and derives practical tasks for enhancing its cultural heritage value and status. To this end, the study reviews the paradigm shift in cultural heritage concerning modern arts and and substantiates the historical transmission lineage and the tangible existence of works in sinmuyong through literature research and case analysis. The findings confirm that sinmuyong is the product of the an autonomous aesthetics that led to the modern change of tradition and that it sufficiently meets the requirements of “living heritage” through an established transmission lineage and identifiable repertoire.. This study is significant in broadening the horizon of Korean dance heritage by defining sinmuyong as an ongoing, living heritage.

본 연구는 한국 근대무용의 핵심인 ‘신무용’을 현대 무형유산 담론의 관점에서 재조명하고, 그 문화유산적 가치와 위상 제고를 위한 실천적 과제를 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 근대예술에 대한 문화유산의 패러다임 변화를 고찰하였고, 근대예술로서 신무용의 역사적 전승 계보와 작품의 실체성을 문헌 연구 및 사례 분석을 통해 실증하였다. 분석 결과, 신무용은 전통의 현대적 변용을 주도한 주체적 미학의 산물이며, 공고한인적 계보와 작품 단위를 통해 ‘살아있는 유산’으로서의 요건을 충분히 갖추고 있음을 확인하였다. 결론적으로 신무용의 위상 회복을 위해서는 무용계 내부의 인식 성찰과 더불어, 국가 무형유산 체계 내의 포용적 수용, 교육과정의 공적 자산화 및 디지털 아카이브 구축이 선행되어야 한다. 본 연구는 신무용을 ‘현재진행형의 유산’으로 규정함으로써 한국 무용 유산의 지평을 확장했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
