Designers reinterpreting traditional Korean costume for contemporary fashion need both material evidence—form, fabric, and dimensions—and dress-historical interpretation of symbolism and context. These two types of information are dispersed across museum artifact databases and academic publications, hindering integrated exploration, and general-purpose generative AI typically returns responses lacking the material evidence and cultural context specific to traditional costume. Hence, this study designed and implemented a RAG-based fashion design AI agent that combines the Dankook University Seokjuseon Memorial Museum artifact database and the museum’s own journal, the Journal of Korean Costume corpus as dual knowledge sources. Depending on the designer’s query intent, the system selectively grounds responses in artifact data, in scholarly interpretation, or in an integration of both. Without RAG, the model produced generic suggestions with no artifact accession numbers or scholarly citations across all queries. With RAG enabled, responses incorporated on average 3 artifacts and 5 academic papers per query, and every cited accession number matched an actual museum record. Intent-based source selection remained stable in an extended evaluation portfolio, and for queries requiring artifact-grounded evidence, the dual-collection architecture clearly outperformed a single-merged-collection baseline in securing material evidence. Analyzed through the FEA consumer needs model, artifact measurement data supplied the physical grounds for the functional dimension, while dress-historical interpretation drawn from journal articles served as the cultural grounds for the expressive and aesthetic dimensions—enabling designers to make source-grounded planning decisions across all three FEA dimensions. This study demonstrates the structural feasibility of an AI agent that links traditional costume archives with academic literature, providing designers with support for evidence-based design planning grounded in traditional costume resources.
