This study aims to analyze the formative characteristics of sustainable fashion design found in the collections of the fashion brand Marine Serre. Based on this analysis, the study examines how sustainability is visually expressed within contemporary fashion. The research methodology combines a theoretical review based on previous studies with a case analysis of Marine Serre’s collections. The analysis focuses on collection images and materials obtained from professional fashion platforms and official channels. After reviewing various classification systems proposed in previous studies, this study reconstructed the analytical criteria into five formative characteristics: environmental sustainability, couture-like decorative characteristics, traditionality, unexpectedness, and deconstruction. Environmental sustainability refers to resource circulation and reuse; couture-like decorative characteristics emphasize handcrafted and decorative expressions; traditionality involves the reinterpretation of historical costumes and cultural elements; unexpectedness reflects the combination of heterogeneous materials and functions; and deconstruction denotes the disassembly and recomposition of conventional garment structures. The scope of analysis includes collections from Marine Serre’s debut at Paris Fashion Week in the Spring/Summer 2018 season to the Fall/Winter 2026 season. The selected cases focused on works employing upcycling techniques identified through designer interviews, the official websites, the YouTube channels, Instagram, and fashion-related articles and reports. The findings reveal that Marine Serre’s sustainable fashion design extends beyond environmentally friendly practices and creates distinctive formative expressions through the recombination of various materials and structures. Furthermore, these formative characteristics tend to be manifested in integrated and hybrid expressions rather than isolated elements. This study contributes to a broader understanding of sustainable fashion design from a formative perspective rather than limiting it to environmental considerations. Future studies should further explore the aesthetic values and narratives embedded within these formative characteristics.

본 연구는 패션 브랜드 마린 세르의 지속 가능 패션 디자인에 나타난 조형적 특성을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 통해 오늘날 패션에서 지속 가능성이 어떠한 방식으로 시각화되고 확장되는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구 방법으로는 선행 연구를 바탕으로 한 이론적 고찰과 함께, 마린 세르 컬렉션에 나타난 사례 분석을 병행하였다. 분석 대상은 마린 세르가 파리 컬렉션에 데뷔한 2018년 S/S 컬렉션부터 2026년 F/W 컬렉션까지로 설정하였으며, 공식 자료를 바탕으로 업사이클링 및 데드스톡 소재 활용 여부가 확인 가능한 사례를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 마린 세르의 지속 가능한 패션의 조형적 특성을 도출하였으며, 선행 연구에서 제시된 다양한 특성을 검토한 후 이를 재구성하여 분석 기준으로 설정하였다. 본 연구에서는 자원순환과 재사용 개념을 환경성으로, 수공예적 요소와 장식적 표현을 강조한 개념을 쿠튀르적 장식성으로, 과거 복식및 문화적 요소를 재해석한 표현을 전통성으로, 이질적 소재와 기능의 결합을 의외성으로, 그리고 기존 의복구조를 분해하고 재조합하는 방식을 해체성으로 구분하여 총 다섯 가지 조형적 특성으로 범주화하였다. 분석 결과, 마린 세르의 지속 가능한 패션 디자인은 단순한 친환경적 실천을 넘어 다양한 소재와 구조의 재구성을 통해 독창적인 조형적 표현을 형성하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 각 조형적 특성은 개별적으로 나타나기보다 상호 결합하여 복합적인 방식으로 구현되는 경향을 보였다. 본 연구는 마린 세르의 지속 가능한 패션디자인을 환경적 관점에 국한하지 않고 조형적 특성이라는 측면에서 분석함으로써 디자인 표현 방식에 대한 이해를 확장하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 향후 연구에서는 이러한 조형적 특성이 가지고 있는 미적 가치와 내러티브에 대한 심층적 연구가 계속 이루어지길 기대한다.
