This article examines the historical transformation and contemporary significance of Yeondeunghoe (the Lotus Lantern Festival), which is recognized as both a National Intangible Cultural Heritage event of Korea and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event of humanity. First, it defines the meanings of yeondeung (lantern lighting), gwandung (lantern viewing), and jedung (lantern procession). While yeondeung refers to the act of illuminating lanterns, gwandung and jedung represent different ways of using lanterns. Gwandung involves hanging lanterns high for visual appreciation, whereas jedung involves carrying lanterns by hand and forming a procession. A review of historical documents shows that until the late Joseon period, gwandung was virtually synonymous with Yeondeunghoe. However, during the modernization period and Japanese colonial era, gwandung and jedung came to coexist. In contemporary times, the lantern procession (jedung haengnyeol) has become the most defining feature of Yeondeunghoe. In designating Yeondeunghoe as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage event, considerable debate arose over the origins of gwandung and jedung, which diverted attention from the essential nature of the festival itself. Compared with gwandung, jedung allows participants to carry lanterns and join the procession, making it more effective in expressing a sense of community and encouraging active participation. Because jedung better highlights the performative and festive aspects of Yeondeunghoe, it gradually became the festival’s central element. In particular, jedung facilitates the creation of lanterns in diverse forms and provides an effective means of expressing the communal and celebratory character of Yeondeunghoe through collective procession. Today, Yeondeunghoe has become one of Korea’s representative festivals, open to everyone regardless of religion or nationality. Since the incorporation of UNESCO’s heritage framework into Korea’s intangible heritage system, greater emphasis has been placed on community participation and contemporary relevance. Yeondeunghoe has come to embody these values. However, current evaluation criteria for both National and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage primarily focus on ritual procedures and event management, making them inadequate for capturing the true essence of Yeondeunghoe. Therefore, establishing new criteria for understanding and evaluating Yeondeunghoe is necessary for guiding its future development. Rather than focusing solely on the formal distinctions between gwandung and jedung, greater attention should be given to preserving and enhancing the festival’s fundamental qualities of community spirit and festivity.
