Modern East Asian performance culture was not neatly divided along national lines. Performers took the stage in joint productions that brought together Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and even British participants. The content of these performances, moreover, cannot be reduced to a single national tradition. Rather, they consisted of hybrid repertoires combining tightrope walking, aerial acrobatics, magic, and other types of circus feats. Japanese sources present the Korean tightrope acrobat Lee Bong-un as a “Korean master of technique” and a leading figure in “aerial acrobatics,” who captivated audiences with his performances. Meanwhile, Kim Won-gi, a Korean dwarf acrobat known in Japan as “Issun Hōshi,” demonstrated skills such as ball catching, tightrope walking, and magic. Another dwarf performer, Kang Jin-bu (known as “Nichōbō” in Japan), partnered with Kim Won-gi and coordinated with him in their performances. Additionally, a troupe led by Han Bong-san included Kim Won-gi along with Chinese impresario Han Fengshan. They toured various regions of Japan, staging shows that featured technical feats, acrobatics, and magic. By the 1920s, they had started touring Korea, presenting large-scale shows with casts of about 60 performers, including women. Thus, Korean performers were not marginalized in modern East Asian performance culture. Rather, they enhanced the quality of multinational productions with their skills. The hybridity observed in the performance culture examined in this study should not be understood as a mere mixture. Instead, it was a defining feature of modern performance culture, in which imperial mobility, colonial perspectives, and reconfigured traditional performance overlapped on a single stage.
