The concept of negotiation can vary in different situations and cultures. This study looks at negotiation as the process of interactive communication through which people are required to negotiate and work together to come up with the best and the most creative solution(s). This democratic, discussion-based approach is particularly important and needed in the Korean cultural context where people have been avoiding conflict itself and the confrontation style of conflict resolution. With their society becoming culturally diverse and open, Korean people have no choice but to directly deal with conflicting situations through communication. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to critically assess communication patterns most Korean people use in negotiations from the aforementioned communication perspective and shed some light on future directions they can take. The major communication patterns found include unidirectional, emotionally charged, and not transparent. The major theoretical implication of this study for cross-cultural studies is that it supports and extends literature on general cultural patterns by illustrating detailed ways in which this general knowledge is manifested in situated moments of interaction.

협상은 이상적인 갈등관리 방법의 하나로 각광을 받고 있다. 커뮤니케이션 개념은 크게 전달모델과 사회구성주의모델,두 가지로 나뉠 수 있다.사회구성주의모델에 근거한 이상적인 협상은 수평적 관계를 전제로 자유로운 토론을 통해 합의를 도출해 내는 쌍방향 커뮤니케이션이다.반면에,한국적 협상 커뮤니케이션 스타일의 일반적 특성은 일방적이며 감정적이며 불투명하다는 것이다. 본 논문은 이러한 한국 협상 커뮤니케이션의 특성을 상호작용 커뮤니케이션의 관점에서 비판적으로 고찰해 보았다.구체적으로,다양한 출처에서 수집한 자료를 바탕으로 한국적 협상 커뮤니케이션 스타일이 구체적으로 상호작용으로서의 커뮤니케이션 과정에 어떻게 부합되지 않는가를 면밀히 지적하여 민주화와 세계화로 점철되는 현대 사회에서 한국적 협상 커뮤니케이션이 나아갈 방향을 제시했다.
