A person’s name is used continuously from birth to death, and it reflects the hopes and expectations placed upon that individual. A name is also closely related to one’s personality and life. Despite the significance of names, however, academic research on nameology has remained insufficient. The purposes of this study are, first, to explore and integrate the relationship among Donghak Thought which emphasizes the essence and cultivation of the human inner self, Mingliological studies which structurally analyze human temperament and disposition, and Nameology of Hangul Personality Psychology which interprets personality and psychological characteristics through the phonetic structure of names. Second, this study aims to examine the influence of names on human life. The research method employed in analyzing the lives and thoughts of the three leaders of Donghak is Nameology of Hangul Personality Psychology. This theory analyzes the structural relationship between Destiny Governed by the Initial Consonant of the First Syllable of a Name(中心命運), and the Monthly Command(월령) , Monthly Stem(月干), and Daily Branch(日支) within one’s natal chart, namely Bazi(八字). Through this approach, the study examines how names may influence an individual’s psychological tendencies and social role formation. Specifically, this study analyzes the natal chart structures of the three Donghak leaders and compares the consonantal changes in the Destiny Governed by the Initial Consonant of the First Syllable of a Name before and after their name changes by converting them into the framework of the Ten Gods based on their birth stems and branches(出生干支). Furthermore, the phonetic and semantic characteristics of their names are compared with major events in their lives in order to discuss how nameological elements may have contributed to the manifestation of religious leadership and social influence. In addition, this study reexamines academically the importance of names and the possibility that Nameology of Hangul Personality Psychology may be applied to character studies and interpretations of socio-historical contexts. The findings of this study are as follows. First, similarities were identified between the ideological characteristics of the Donghak leaders and the structures of their natal charts. Second, the phonetic structures of their names also showed patterns related to those characteristics. Third, the study suggests that the inner structure of human beings may be integratively expressed through various dimensions, including ideology, natal charts, and names. The significance of this study lies in presenting the possibility of understanding the lives and ideological orientations of the Donghak leaders through the phonetic structures of their names, while also proposing a new interpretive framework that views human beings as entities in which inner consciousness, temperament, behavior, and expression are organically interconnected.

사람의 이름은 태어나서부터 생을 마감할 때까지 불리워지며 이름에는 그 사람에 대해 갖는 희망이 반영되며 이름은 그 사람의 성격이나삶과 긴밀한 상관성을 갖는다. 그러나 이름의 중요성에 비해 이름에대한 성명학적 연구는 부족하다. 본 연구의 목적은 첫째, 인간 내면의본질과 수양을 강조하는 동학사상, 인간의 기질과 성향을 구조적으로분석하는 명리학, 그리고 이름의 발음 구조를 통해 성격 및 심리적 특성을 해석하는 한글 성격심리성명학 간의 연계성을 탐색하고 종합하며, 둘째, 이름이 사람의 삶에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 동학 교주 3인의 삶과 사상을 분석하는 연구방법은 한글성격심리성명학이다. 한글성격심리성명학은 사람 이름의 첫소리인 중심명운을 명조의 월령·월간·일지와의 구조적 상관성을 분석한다. 이를 통해 이름이 개인의 심리적 성향과 사회적 역할 형성에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 수있는지를 검토한다. 구체적으로는, 동학 교주 3인을 대상으로 그들의명조 구조를 분석하고, 개명 전·후 이름의 중심명운 자음 변화를 출생간지에 입각하여 십성으로 환산하고 일간 대비 명조의 십성 구조와 비교·분석한다. 또한 교주들의 생애 사건들과 이름의 음운적·의미적 특 성을 비교하여, 성명학적 요소가 종교적 지도력과 사회적 영향력 발현 에 기여했음을 논의한다. 나아가 한글성격심리성명학이 인물 연구와 사회사적 맥락 해석에 활용될 수 있는 가능성과 이름의 중요성을 학문 적으로 재조명한다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 동학 교주들의 사상적 공통성과 명조 구조 간에는 유사한 특징이 나타났으며, 둘째, 교주들 이름의 발음 구조 또한 첫 번 째 특징들과 연계되는 양상을 보였다. 셋째, 인간의 내면 구조가 사상, 사람의 출생 명조, 이름이라는 다양한 층위에서 통합적으로 드러날 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구의 함의는 사람 이름의 발음 구조를 통해 동 학 교주들의 삶과 사상적 방향성을 이해할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고, 인간을 내면의 의식과 기질, 그리고 삶 속에서 드러나는 행동과 표현이 서로 연결된 존재로 바라보는 새로운 해석 틀을 제시하였다는 것이다.
