This study conserved the materials, analyzed their composition, and restored the cover of Maengsailji, a scrapbook-style record produced in the early 1900s. Maengsailji contains manuscripts, letters, membership recruitment notices, and production process records related to Korean Braille (Hunmaengjeongeum). Its body and cover are bound together using a metal binding channel and rod. Paper fiber analysis revealed that the main body base paper consisted exclusively of softwood chemical pulp, whereas the cover comprised a mixture of softwood chemical pulp, softwood groundwood pulp, and herbaceous fibers. Records within the body were treated with deacidification and reinforcement while still attached to the base paper, while inserted papers were separated and conserved individually. The metal rod and binding channel—structurally connecting the cover and body—caused paper damage due to oxidation. Furthermore, the cover, already weakened by corrosion, became irreparable after reattachment to the metal binding channel. For safe conservation of the records, the cover was lined on both sides with Hanji (mulberry-fiber paper) and 100% cotton paper noted for its high preservability. The metal rod and binding channel were coated with phosphate on the iron plates to inhibit further oxidation, followed by neutralization and oiling for rust prevention. The rivets connecting the metal binding channel to the cover were made of copper to facilitate forming. This study provides practical reference for the conservation treatment of scrapbook-type records.
