This paper explores how English pronunciation can be taught more effectively in Korean university EFL classrooms through a communicative approach. Although pronunciation is a key component of intelligibility and successful oral communication, it has often been marginalized in Korean higher education, where English instruction has traditionally emphasized grammar, reading, and test preparation. In response to this limitation, the paper argues that pronunciation should not be treated as an isolated, drill-based skill, but should instead be integrated into communicative, skills-based instruction. The discussion focuses on two pronunciation areas that are especially problematic for Korean learners of English: the segmental feature /θ/ and the suprasegmental feature of utterance stress. These areas are pedagogically significant because they affect learners’ intelligibility, listener comprehension, and confidence in spoken interaction. Drawing on previous research on communicative language teaching, intelligibility, and learner-centered pronunciation instruction, the paper presents two lesson plans designed for Korean university learners. The first lesson plan addresses the production of /θ/ through reading, listening, and speaking activities, while the second develops learners’ awareness and use of utterance stress through listening comprehension, information processing, and guided speaking tasks. By connecting pronunciation work with meaningful classroom interaction, the proposed lessons aim to support more balanced oral development. In this respect, the paper advocates a learner-centered model that links pronunciation practice to communicative participation, intelligibility, and confidence. The paper suggests that communicative pronunciation teaching can offer practical pedagogical implications for improving spoken English instruction in Korean universities, particularly in classrooms where pronunciation has received limited instructional attention.
