The poet Shin Dong-yeop experienced the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War. The pain of that era was created by human greed, by humanity’s desire for the speed of the age. In his poetry, Shin Dong-yeop argues that Korea must resolve this historical pain through the Donghak spirit of Innaecheon (人乃天)-the idea that “human beings are heaven”-and through neutralization. This idea is clearly expressed in Shin Dong-yeop’s “Geumgang.” The flow of nature does not hurry. The tragedies of modern and contemporary Korea resulted from humanity’s desire for historical speed, which goes against the natural flow. Through his poetry and prose, Shin Dong-yeop expresses the idea that the neutralization of the Korean Peninsula means maintaining a neutral position without taking sides, even when wars occur in the world, and adhering to neutrality through junghwa, the cosmic principle of harmony and balance. The waters of the Geumgang River flow slowly from above to below at the speed of nature. The Geumgang does not suddenly and without reason greatly change its speed, nor does its water surge upward from below. Poetry shows human life and the age as if painting a picture. Through images of nature, Shin Dong-yeop explains that human beings, situated between the natural heaven, the Geumgang River, and the earth, need a mind harmonized through junghwa in both life and history. The “love” in Shin Dong-yeop’s poetry is connected to the “neutralization of the Korean Peninsula.” This paper interprets and discusses love in Shin Dong-yeop’s poetry as love between South Korea and North Korea. South and North Korea are family and one people. Shin Dong-yeop’s poetry and prose argue that the Korean Peninsula, divided by historical tragedy, must declare the “neutralization of the Korean Peninsula” to the world through absolute love and create a path toward peace. The “neutrality” in Shin Dong-yeop’s poetry is connected to the Donghak spirit of human equality and the April 19 Revolution. This paper connects the mutual bowing in the “neutral wedding hall” in Shin Dong-yeop’s poem “Let the Shells Go Away” to the neutralized unification of the Korean Peninsula. At the time Shin Dong-yeop wrote this poem, North Korea was discussing the neutralized unification of the Korean Peninsula, and Pastor Moon Ik-hwan also spoke of neutralized unification. Shin Dong-yeop, who took interest in this issue, became interested in the neutralization of the Korean Peninsula and connected marriage, as the first form of love, with peace and neutralization. Shin Dong-yeop’s revolutionary spirit did not stop there; it can also be connected to the spirit of neutralization and peace on the Korean Peninsula. Shin Dong-yeop argues that when the natural flow of nature connects love, peace, human equality, and revolutionary spirit through junghwa, the neutralization of the Korean Peninsula - a utopian ideology - can become a political reality.
