This study aims to understand adolescent gambling experiences within the family context and interaction processes, focusing on how discrepancies in perceptions and coping strategies between adolescents and their parents influence the formation and persistence of gambling problems. Data were collected through focus group interviews (FGI) and in-depth individual interviews with three adolescents who had experienced gambling and their parents. The data were analyzed using grounded theory methods, including open, axial, and selective coding. The findings revealed four overarching themes and twelve subthemes for adolescents, and four overarching themes and thirteen subthemes for parents. The integrated analysis showed that adolescent gambling is characterized by a structural dynamic in which discrepancies between adolescents and parents in perceptions and responses are reinforced through ongoing interaction processes, thereby intensifying the problem. Adolescents tended to perceive gambling as a normalized, game-like daily activity with low risk awareness, whereas parents viewed it as an addiction or crisis, resulting in divergent perceptions of problem severity. Differences were also observed in coping strategies: adolescents primarily relied on avoidance and concealment, while parents employed control, monitoring, and financial interventions, leading to the formation of conflictual interaction patterns. Furthermore, adolescents understood gambling problems at an individual level and expected resolution through personal effort, whereas parents framed them as family-level issues requiring institutional intervention. These discrepancies in problem understanding and response strategies led to delayed intervention, asymmetrical access to support systems, and conflicting recovery approaches, ultimately contributing to the persistence of gambling problems. This study provides theoretical contributions by conceptualizing adolescent gambling as a structural phenomenon reproduced through family interaction processes rather than as an individual-level issue. It identifies discrepancies in perceptions and responses as a core mechanism underlying the persistence of gambling problems. Based on these findings, the study suggests the need for integrated interventions, including family-based approaches, early intervention systems, and regulation of digital environments.

이 연구는 청소년 도박 경험을 가족 맥락과 상호작용 과정 속에서 이해하고 청소년과 부모 간 인식 및 대응 방식이 도박 문제의 형성과 지속에 미치는 영향을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 도박 경험이 있는 청소년 3명과 부모 3명을 대상으로 FGI와 개별인터뷰를 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 근거이론 방법에 따라 개방코딩, 축코딩, 선택코딩 절차를 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 청소년은 4개의 상위주제와 12개의 하위주제, 부모는 4개의 상위주제와 13개의 하위주제가 도출되었다. 두 집단의 인터뷰를 통합 분석한 결과 청소년 도박 경험은 청소년과 부모 간 인식 및 대응의 불일치가 상호작용 과정 속에서 강화되며 문제를 심화시키는 구조적 특성을 가진 것으로 확인되었다. 청소년은 도박을 게임과 유사한 일상적 경험으로 인식하며 낮은 위험 인식을 보였으나 부모는 이를 중독 및 위기 상황으로 인식하여 문제 심각도에 대한 인식 차이가 나타났다. 또한 개입 방식에서도 청소년은 회피와 은폐를 중심으로 대응하는 반면, 부모는 통제, 감시, 금전적 개입 등의 전략을 사용하여 상호작용 과정에서 갈등 구조가 형성되는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 더하여 청소년은 도박 문제를 개인적 차원에서 이해하고 개인적 노력에 의한 해결을 기대하는 반면, 부모는 이를 가족 전체의 문제로 확장하여 제도적 개입까지 요구하는 경향을 보였다. 이러한 문제 이해 및 대응 전략의 불일치는 개입 시점의 지연, 지원체계 접근의 비대칭, 회복 전략의 충돌로 이어지며 결과적으로 도박 문제가 지속되는 요인으로 작용하였다본 연구는 청소년 도박 문제를 개인 수준의 문제가 아닌 가족 내 상호작용 과정에서 재생산되는 구조적 현상으로 설명하고, 인식 및 대응의 불일치를 핵심 메커니즘으로 도출하였다는 점에서 이론적 의의를 갖는다. 이를 바탕으로 가족 기반 개입, 조기 개입 체계 구축, 디지털 환경 규제 등 통합적 대응의 필요성을 제시하였다.
